Instagram is leaning heavily into user transparency by actively expanding “Your Algorithm”—a major customization feature designed to pull back the curtain on how Meta’s machine learning categorizes your interests.
First launched as a limited public trial for Reels, the interface was expanded to the Explore page and is now hitting users’ main home feeds. Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently noted that the platform wants to evolve this tool from a hidden deep-menu setting into something that feels native and central to how you browse.
1. How the Interface Works
Instead of forcing you to passively “train” the AI by liking or skipping posts, the feature presents an explicit, editable list of the topic profiles Instagram has assigned to your account based on your in-app activity (e.g., “BookTok,” “Sneaker Culture,” “Interior Design,” or “POV Humor”).
- The Breakdown Layout: The dashboard splits your profile into two interactive lists: “What You’re Into” and “What You Don’t Want to See.”
- Direct Pruning: If the AI has incorrectly guessed an interest, you can long-press the topic to remove it entirely or swap it into the “see less” column.
- Custom Manual Steering: You aren’t boxed into preset buckets. You can tap an “Add” button and type in custom keywords or niche interests to explicitly tell the algorithm what you want to discover.
- The In-App Shortcut Test: Instagram is testing highly accessible access points, including an experimental shortcut that drops down the “Your Algorithm” menu the moment you swipe down on your home feed.

2. The Step-by-Step Customization Setup
If your account has been migrated into the active rollout window, you can view, edit, or completely overwrite your interest baseline through the following steps:
1.Access Content Preferences:Requires latest app build.
Open your Instagram profile, tap the Menu icon (the three horizontal lines) in the top right corner, scroll down, and select Content Preferences.
2.Open the ‘Your Algorithm’ Panel:Alternative shortcuts available.
Tap on Your Algorithm. Alternatively, if you are actively browsing Reels, you can tap the three-dot menu (…) or the two-line heart icon in the upper corner to jump straight to the module.
3.Purge Inferred Topics:Review AI assumptions.
Scroll through the “What You’re Into” list. Long-press any irrelevant or annoying topics and select Remove or move them to the See Less column.
4.Inject Custom Interests:Force-steer discovery.
Tap the Add button, type your exact desired niche (e.g., “rescue dogs” or “mechanical keyboards”), and hit the up arrow to save. Refresh your feed to let the changes take effect.
3. The “Share Your Algorithm” Viral Trend
Interestingly, Meta has turned a settings panel into an organic engagement loop by allowing users to tap a share arrow in the top right corner of the dashboard to post their “Your Algorithm” block directly to their Instagram Stories.
The layout renders as a scannable graphic displaying the user’s current top topic mix. It has quickly evolved into a viral internet meme, with users publishing their hyper-specific (and often embarrassing) algorithmic profiles, creating fictionalized interest boards for their pets, or turning the templates into self-deprecating aesthetic mood boards.
The Strategic Horizon: Alongside this granular control, Instagram has also quietly rolled out a “Reset Suggested Content” master button. If your feed feels completely unfixable or clogged with old, expired phase interests, this option allows you to entirely wipe your recommendation history clean—essentially letting you start teaching the AI from scratch.
