In an explosive milestone for India’s deep-tech and developer landscape, OpenAI has revealed that weekly active users for its coding and software engineering agent platform, Codex, have grown 27 times in India since the beginning of 2026.

The blistering growth rate solidifies India’s position as one of the world’s most aggressive markets for advanced AI adoption. According to company data, the country now ranks among the top five nations globally for Codex adoption and firmly inside the top ten for overall platform engagement.

1. Tracking the Velocity: Interactions Outpace Headcount

The exponential expansion of the user base is mirrored by an even sharper increase in everyday developer interaction volume:

  • The Daily Surge: Beyond the 27X growth in weekly active users, OpenAI confirmed that daily interactions with the Codex system in India surged by more than 20 times by late April 2026.
  • The Coding Median: The baseline for this growth was established early in the year. In February, analytics data indicated that Codex usage for core coding tasks in India was already running at about three times the global average, while coding-specific queries tracked at nearly three times the global median.
  • The Transition to Action: OpenAI’s leadership emphasized that the platform’s momentum is driven by its shift away from simple Q&A chat loops. Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy & Global Affairs for India at OpenAI, noted at Mumbai Tech Week that the ecosystem is entering an “agentic world,” where reasoning models autonomously execute long-running, multi-step workflows for the user.

2. Democratizing the Build: The Shift to Non-Coding Tasks

A standout dynamic of Codex’s trajectory in India is its rapid evolution into a general-purpose operational assistant. The platform is actively breaking out of isolated engineering silos:

  • The Non-Technical Influx: More than a quarter (25%+) of all Codex requests originating from India are now for non-coding tasks.
  • The Multi-Tool Playbook: Professionals, operators, and business teams are heavily utilizing the agent’s advanced reasoning filters to synthesize massive data logs, draft formal documents, automate repetitive research tasks, and clean up internal communication lines.
  • Natural Language Structuring: Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for the Asia-Pacific region at OpenAI, credited India’s unique “builder culture” for the unexpected adoption pathways. Non-technical founders and students are effectively bypassing traditional syntax hurdles, leveraging natural language prompts to build functional applications and websites from scratch.

3. Corporate Integrations and System Capabilities

The massive user expansion is further backed by high-volume, institutional implementations across India’s largest technology services and fintech firms:

  • Enterprise Alliances: OpenAI has scaled up dedicated corporate collaborations with IT giants including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys, alongside digital payment pioneer Razorpay, to embed Codex directly into their enterprise and software engineering pipelines.
  • The Ecosystem Flywheel: Startups are tapping into millions of dollars worth of programmatic support. OpenAI is actively partnering with dozens of Indian venture capital firms to distribute startup credit allocations of up to $50,000 per entity to lower the initial capital risk of running complex AI pipelines.
  • Computer Use Integration: This 27X growth curve arrives alongside continuous upgrades to the native application stack. Moving past basic browser code sandboxes, OpenAI recently extended “Computer Use” capabilities to Codex users on Windows 11. The update allows the agent to safely take over local PC permissions to test, execute, and debug code directly where the project context natively sits, further compressing the timeline required to take a digital product from concept to production.
