Google is reportedly working on a setting that will allow users to manually disable Gemini Live’s “Guided Vision” feature, giving users a way to scale back the AI assistant’s real-time camera tracking.
A deep dive into code strings within the unreleased Google App for Android (version 17.38.5.sa.arm64) revealed a hidden toggle titled “Guided vision in Live.” While standard consumers cannot activate the switch just yet, its presence in the backend backend indicates a formal rollout is in development.
What is Guided Vision?
Launched alongside the Pixel 10 series, Guided Vision (also referred to by Google as Visual Guidance) dramatically upgraded Gemini Live by allowing the AI assistant to tap into a smartphone’s live camera feed or screen share during active voice sessions.
- Real-Time Analysis: It allows users to point their lenses at their surroundings—such as an engine bay, a clothing rack, or an error screen—and discuss it seamlessly with Gemini.
- The “Arcade Interface”: As you talk, the software maps the frame, automatically flashing tracking boxes, dynamic outlines, and contextual labels directly over physical objects in your viewfinder.
Why Google is Building an “Off Switch”
While technically impressive for learning or troubleshooting, the feature has introduced unexpected friction for certain users, prompting Google to rethink its mandatory implementation:
- Slowing Down “AI Fatigue”: Tech analysts point out that constantly watching a viewfinder populate with bright tracking rectangles and labels during a casual chat can trigger a form of sensory overload.
- A Return to Cleaner Streams: Disabling the “Guided Vision” toggle likely won’t block the model from using visual context entirely. Instead, it is expected to function as a “throwback” mode—allowing the camera to stream a clean video feed to Gemini for conversational context without cluttering your mobile screen with automated interface overlays.
Because the menu option sits inside code files, standard phone users will have to wait for a subsequent public Google app update before the toggle officially surfaces in their account settings.
