Anthropic has officially launched Claude Cowork, moving the agentic, multi-step productivity tool out of its initial desktop-only research preview and onto the web and mobile devices.
Described by the company as “Claude Code for non-technical knowledge work,” Cowork is designed to act as an autonomous virtual teammate. Instead of forcing users to break down complex workflows into individual, back-and-forth prompts, it allows users to assign a high-level goal and lets Claude handle the execution, file management, and tool orchestration in the background.
1. The Big Shift: Moving to the Cloud
When Cowork first debuted, it ran strictly inside a local virtualized sandbox on the Claude Desktop app, meaning users had to keep their laptops open and awake for a task to finish. The newly deployed update changes this completely:
- Offline Execution: Cowork has transitioned to a cloud-based architecture. You can now launch a complex data-sifting or research task at your desk, close your laptop, and walk away. The agent will continue running entirely in the cloud.
- Mobile Notifications & Approvals: If Cowork reaches a critical junction or requires explicit human permission (e.g., approving a drafted email response), it will push a notification directly to the user’s phone. You can review the draft or clarify instructions from the mobile app.
- Persistent Progress Tracking: You can start a task on your desktop, check its live step-by-step progress from your phone while on the move, and pick up the finished file download from any web browser later.
2. Core Capabilities & Workflows
Cowork focuses heavily on automating high-effort, repetitive administrative and operational tasks rather than pure software development. It functions across local directories and cloud-linked applications using the Model Context Protocol (MCP):
1.Define the Secure Directory:Desktop & Web Setup.
Point Claude Cowork to a specific local folder or cloud-drive directory. The agent is strictly sandboxed and cannot read or touch any files outside the boundary you explicitly grant.
2.Connect Enterprise Tools:Optional Integration.
Link external data sources using native MCP connectors (such as Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, or Slack) to allow Claude to pull information across platforms.
3.Assign the Goal:Natural Language Command.
Queue up a task in plain English. For example: “Read the 10 unorganized vendor contracts in this folder, extract the renewal dates and pricing terms into a structured Excel spreadsheet, and draft a summary email.”
4.Review the Execution:Human-in-the-Loop Safeguard.
Monitor the progress panel. Claude builds a plan, executes the file modifications or code-based data extractions autonomously, and stops to ask for your final sign-off before sending any outbound communications.
3. Unexpected User Data: Not Just for Coders
Alongside the mobile rollout, Anthropic released an aggregated analysis of 1.2 million Cowork sessions across 600,000 organizations. The data revealed a striking trend: despite the hype surrounding AI coding assistants, more than 90% of Cowork sessions are used for non-technical operations.
| Usage Category | Percentage | Core Tasks Observed |
| Business Process & Ops | 33.4% | Reconciling sheets, building onboarding checklists, compiling weekly status updates. |
| Content Creation & Copywriting | 16.4% | Assembling report drafts, slide decks, proposals, and social content from raw source text. |
| Software Development | 8.7% | Minor script writing, repository file management, and quick formatting fixes. |
4. Pricing and Availability
- The Paid Tier Wall: Claude Cowork is decoupled from free accounts and requires a paid subscription tier (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise).
- The Max Plan Advantage: The new web and mobile cloud-running features are currently launching first in beta for Claude Max subscribers (Anthropic’s premium $100/month tier). Access will steadily cascade down to Pro and Team plans over the coming weeks.
- Usage Incentive: To mark the cross-platform cloud launch, Anthropic has doubled the weekly Cowork usage limits for all eligible paid subscribers through August 5, 2026.
