WhatsApp is finally breaking its reliance on Siri for in-car use. Meta has officially begun rolling out a standalone WhatsApp app for Apple CarPlay, currently available to beta testers. This represents the first time the messaging giant has offered a native, visual interface for the vehicle dashboard.
While users have long been able to send and receive WhatsApp messages via Siri, the new app introduces a structured layout with dedicated tabs for Chats, Calls, and Favorites.
1. The New CarPlay Interface
The app is designed to mirror the essential sections of the mobile version while adhering to strict safety standards to minimize driver distraction.
| Tab | Functionality |
| Chats | Displays a list of recent conversations from the last 20–25 days. |
| Calls | Shows a reverse-chronological history of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls. |
| Favorites | Syncs with your mobile “Favorites” list for one-tap calling or messaging. |
| Unread | A blue dot indicator highlights chats with pending messages. |
2. Safety First: The “No-Read” Rule
To ensure eyes stay on the road, Meta has implemented significant restrictions on how much information is displayed:
- No Message History: You can see who you chatted with, but you cannot open a chat to scroll through past messages.
- Voice-Only Input: There is no on-screen keyboard. All outgoing messages must still be dictated using Siri.
- No Media or Status: Photos, videos, and WhatsApp Status updates are completely hidden from the CarPlay interface.
- Profiles: The app displays contact names and profile pictures (or address book photos if the contact has no set picture) to help with quick identification.
3. Native Calling & Better Integration
The biggest upgrade is the Calls tab, which turns your car into a more efficient communication hub.
- Call Log: You can see exactly when you missed a WhatsApp call directly on the dashboard.
- One-Tap Redial: Tapping any entry in the call log or Favorites list will immediately initiate a WhatsApp audio call.
- Visual Context: Seeing the “Recent Chats” list allows drivers to quickly identify who to message via voice command without having to remember every contact name for Siri.
4. Technical Requirements
The app is part of a broader wave of “social and conversational” apps hitting CarPlay following the iOS 26.4 update, which unlocked support for advanced voice-based interfaces.
- Compatibility: Currently available to WhatsApp Beta for iOS users via TestFlight.
- Visual Modes: Full support for Light and Dark modes, syncing with your car’s headlight settings.
- Public Release: While an exact date hasn’t been set, the app is expected to move from beta to a general public release around WWDC 2026 (June).
5. The Competitive Landscape
WhatsApp’s move follows the arrival of other high-profile apps on the CarPlay platform this month:
- Google Meet: Launched an audio-only CarPlay app on March 23, allowing users to join meetings from the dashboard.
- ChatGPT & Gemini: New “Voice Mode” versions of these AI assistants are now appearing on CarPlay to handle complex, hands-free queries.
“A native WhatsApp experience is a logical step, but the key remains balancing convenience and safety,” noted a report from WABetaInfo. “By allowing drivers to see who messaged them but forcing them to listen rather than read, WhatsApp is setting a standard for responsible in-car communication.”
