In a milestone that has been nearly five years in the making, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has finally broken its long-standing losing streak by reporting a net subscriber addition. According to the latest TRAI data for February 2026, the telco added 21,927 net wireless subscribers, marking its first positive growth since March 2021.
While the number is modest compared to the millions added by rivals, it represents a significant psychological victory for the company as it attempts a slow-motion turnaround.
1. The “5-Year Jinx” Broken
The addition follows a period where Vi lost approximately 85 million subscribers over 60 consecutive months. The shift is being attributed to recent network densification and the initial rollout of 5G services in key metro circles.
| Metric | Vodafone Idea (Feb 2026) | Reliance Jio | Bharti Airtel |
| Net User Addition | +21,927 | +1.62 Million | +4.86 Million |
| Total Subscriber Base | 198.38 Million | 493.11 Million | 472.65 Million |
| Active User (VLR) Ratio | 85.24% | 98.35% | 99.42% |
2. The Catch: It’s an “M2M” Miracle
Analysts have been quick to point out that the “net addition” comes with a significant asterisk. The growth was largely driven by the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and enterprise segment—SIM cards used in smart meters and IoT devices.
- Consumer Churn: When excluding M2M connections, Vi actually lost 490,000 retail users in February. While this is an improvement from the 670,000 lost in January, it indicates that the company is still struggling to retain human mobile subscribers.
- Low ARPU: M2M connections typically generate much lower Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) than traditional mobile plans, meaning this “growth” may not immediately translate to a healthier bottom line.
3. Market Reaction: “Sell the News”
Despite the historic headline, the stock market reacted with skepticism. Vi shares (IDEA) fell over 4.5% today to hit an intraday low of ₹8.13.
- Debt Overhang: Investors remain laser-focused on the company’s ₹2.1 lakh crore debt.
- Funding Gap: Although the government recently froze ₹87,695 crore in AGR dues, the company still needs to raise nearly ₹35,000 crore (in bank funding and non-funded facilities) to execute its three-year, ₹45,000 crore capex plan.
- The “Call Option” Panic: Traders noted a massive sell-off in the derivatives market today, suggesting that the “miracle win” is being treated as a “bull trap” by institutional investors.
4. Strategic Outlook: The 5G & AGR Relief
Vi CEO Akshaya Moondra (via recent analyst calls) has stated that the “AGI issue is now behind” the company following the Cabinet’s December 31 decision to freeze dues.
- Capex Push: The company has spent ₹18,000 crore over the last 18 months to shore up its 4G coverage (now at 85.5%) and begin its 5G journey.
- Pricing Leverage: Vi recently hiked entry-level unlimited 5G pricing to ₹349 in several circles, attempting to boost its ARPU, which currently stands at ₹172—significantly lower than Airtel’s ₹259.
5. Summary of February 2026 Telecom Landscape
- Airtel was the standout performer, adding 4.86 million users—triple the additions of Reliance Jio.
- BSNL continued its decline, losing over 1 lakh subscribers during the month.
- Total Mobile Connections in India reached 1.25 billion, showing that the market is still expanding despite high penetration.
