OpenAI acquires Tech talk show ‘TBPN’

0

In a move that signals a paradigm shift in how AI giants manage their public narrative, OpenAI has officially acquired the buzzy tech-business talk show TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network). The deal, announced by Fidji Simo (OpenAI’s CEO of Applications), marks the company’s first major foray into owning a media platform.

While the financial terms were not officially disclosed, reports from the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal peg the purchase price in the “low hundreds of millions” (estimated between $150M and $300M).

1. What is TBPN?

Launched in October 2024 by entrepreneurs Jordi Hays (Party Round) and John Coogan (Soylent), TBPN has quickly become what The New York Times calls “Silicon Valley’s newest obsession.”

  • The Format: A three-hour daily livestream (11 AM – 2 PM PT) featuring by-the-minute analysis of tech news and candid interviews.
  • The “Power” Audience: Despite a modest average of 70,000 viewers per episode, the show is a favorite among tech elites. It has secured high-profile guests including Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and even Sam Altman.
  • The Financials: The 11-person team was reportedly on track to generate $30 million in ad revenue in 2026 before the acquisition.

2. The Strategy: “Going Direct”

OpenAI is explicitly moving away from the “standard communications playbook.” By owning TBPN, OpenAI gains a direct line to the tech community without the mediation of traditional journalists.

3. The “Editorial Independence” Promise

To maintain the show’s credibility, OpenAI has pledged that TBPN will retain full editorial independence.

  • Content Control: Hays and Coogan will continue to choose their own guests and programming.
  • Open Criticism: Co-founder Jordi Hays noted that the show has criticized the AI industry in the past and will continue to provide “real-time feedback” to the ecosystem.
  • Distribution: The show will remain available across its existing platforms, including X, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and LinkedIn.

4. Why Now? The Hardware & AGI Push

Analysts suggest the acquisition is timed to support OpenAI’s upcoming transition into a for-profit entity and its rumored entry into the consumer hardware market.

“We’re driving a really big technological shift,” wrote Fidji Simo in a memo to staff. “The standard communications playbook just doesn’t apply to us… we need to create a space for a real, constructive conversation about the changes AI creates.”

5. Industry Reaction: A “Seismic Shift” for Journalism

The deal has drawn mixed reactions from the media world:

  • The “Enthusiast” View: Supporters see it as a natural evolution where companies become their own broadcasters (similar to Andreessen Horowitz’s Turpentine acquisition).
  • The Critic’s View: Traditional journalists argue that “editorial independence” is difficult to maintain when your paycheck comes from the primary subject of your coverage.
