Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI has officially vaulted into the unicorn club. The full-stack generative AI startup announced the first close of its $300 million Series B funding round, securing $234 million at a post-money valuation of $1.5 billion.

The massive capital influx marks one of the largest single investment rounds for an Indian AI company, arriving amid escalating urgency for domestic, sovereign AI alternatives.

The Cap Table: HCLTech Leads Strategic Charge

The funding round introduces a heavy corporate backer to Sarvam’s equity ledger. Indian IT services giant HCLTech led the strategic push with a $150 million check, acquiring a 10.46% equity stake in Axonwise Private Limited, the operating entity behind Sarvam.

Global venture firm Bessemer Venture Partners joined the first close alongside aggressive follow-on participation from early backers Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.

The Sovereign Scale: Models, API Volumes, and Compute

Founded in mid-2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam has scaled its operational footprints rapidly over the last fiscal year. The startup’s audited financial baseline shows an expansion from near-zero revenues in FY24 to ₹1.5 crore in FY25, before jumping to ₹45.10 crore in FY26.

The underlying infrastructure performance driving that top-line growth includes:

  • Foundational Frameworks: The company has built and deployed the Sarvam 105B (a 105-billion-parameter reasoning model) and Sarvam 30B (optimized for edge deployments on consumer hardware), both trained entirely from scratch in India.
  • Document AI & Vision: The Sarvam Vision pipeline is currently being utilized to digitize more than 35 million pages of regulated corporate assets, land documents, and insurance records.
  • Voice Capabilities: Its speech models are processing and transcribing more than 500,000 hours of audio monthly across various Indian languages.
  • Daily Throughput: The platform’s conversational layer handles over 2 million daily interactions, while its core inference platform processes 10 million API calls a day (a three-fold increase over the last quarter).

Strategic Focus: Blackwell Compute and Global Guardrails

Sarvam leadership confirmed that the $234 million capital cache will be deployed to secure hardware at scale and fund advanced research into specialized enterprise verticals, specifically targeting agentic AI, automated coding assistants, and custom cybersecurity applications.

Crucially, co-founder Pratyush Kumar revealed that Sarvam has secured early operational access to one of the first Nvidia Blackwell-based AI compute clusters running physically inside India. While Sarvam does not own the physical data center real estate, managing the localized software stack allows the firm to offer low-latency, low-cost inference while keeping critical client data insulated from overseas servers.

The fundraising lands at a critical geopolitical pivot point for the tech sector. Following recent U.S. regulatory directives that forced global frontier firms like Anthropic to abruptly suspend or restrict flagship model access for foreign nationals, the push for indigenous “Sovereign AI” infrastructure has transformed from a long-term policy goal into an immediate commercial requirement for Indian enterprises and public administration bodies.
