0

In the first half of 2025, Russian fertilizer exports to India increased by 20%, rising to 2.5 million tonnes and accounting for a record 33% of India’s total fertilizer imports, according to the Russian Fertilizer Producers Association (RAFP). This shift was primarily driven by a surge in phosphorus-based fertiliser shipments.

Key Highlights

  • Volume Growth: Exports jumped by 0.4 million tonnes compared to H2 2024.
  • Market Share: Russia’s share rose to 33%, meaning one in every three imported fertilizer tonnes in India now originates from Russia.
  • Export Focus: The increase was concentrated in shipments of phosphorus-rich compound fertilisers.Rediff

Strategic Drivers & Broader Implications

Russia’s fertilizer expansion to India comes amid Western sanctions that have reshaped global supply chains. India’s reliance on Russian supplies has deepened as other suppliers face limitations

Comparatively, Russia has also significantly increased its fertilizer shipments to other emerging markets—Africa and Brazil—highlighting a strategic pivot towards BRICS nations.

PhosAgro, Russia’s major fertilizer player, reported supplying nearly 1 million tonnes to India in January–May 2025, up from 700,000 tonnes during the same period last year. This reflects increasing dominance in key input segments such as nitrogen, phosphate, and potash.
