India, Nepal launch UPI-based cross-border remittance system

In a major milestone for regional financial integration and digital neighborhood cooperation, India and Nepal have officially operationalized a peer-to-peer (P2P) cross-border remittance mechanism. The system establishes a direct, real-time link between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI).

Jointly developed by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL)—the overseas arm of the National Payments Corporation of India—and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL), the digital corridor completely bypasses traditional paper-heavy banking channels, allowing millions of citizens, migrant workers, and tourists to transfer funds instantly.

How the UPI-NPI Remittance Corridor Works

The core breakthrough of the integration is the elimination of complex routing data. Users no longer need to exchange sensitive bank account details, IFSC codes, or SWIFT numbers. Instead, the architecture relies entirely on native mobile identifiers:

  • India-to-Nepal Transfers: Indian users can send instant money to Nepal using only the recipient’s registered mobile number or Virtual Payment Address (VPA).
  • Nepal-to-India Transfers: Nepalese citizens can transfer funds directly to India by entering the recipient’s unique UPI ID.

The service has initially rolled out through a select group of commercial banking partners—including Everest Bank, Global IME Bank, Machhapuchchhre Bank, Nabil Bank, and Nepal SBI Bank—with additional financial institutions scheduled to integrate over the coming quarters.

Transaction Caps and Operational Limits

To ensure financial stability and comply with cross-border anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks, both governments have instituted specific transaction guardrails for the digital network:

Corridor DirectionSingle Transaction LimitMonthly Cumulative Cap
India to Nepal₹2,00,000 (INR)No upper monthly limit
Nepal to India₹15,000 (INR equivalent)₹1,00,000 (INR equivalent)

Economic Implications for Migrants and Tourism

The timing of the rollout is highly strategic. Nepal remains one of the largest global recipients of remittances originating from India, driven by deep cultural bonds and an open border layout that sees millions cross annually for employment, education, and trade.

Traditional remittance networks often hit migrant workers with heavy transaction fees and settlement delays lasting several days. The UPI-NPI corridor drops processing times to seconds while drastically lowering conversion fees.

“By creating a real-time, affordable, and secure corridor for cross-border remittances, we are not only simplifying the process for families in both nations but also promoting deep financial inclusion,” stated Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International.

Beyond working-class remittances, the mechanism is set to heavily boost Nepal’s tourism economy. Indian travelers can now completely eliminate the friction of physical currency exchange, cash-handling risks, and unfamiliar foreign exchange surcharges by deploying their domestic UPI apps directly at local Nepalese merchants.

With this activation, Nepal marks a major expansion node in India’s global digital footprint. The UPI architecture is now fully or partially operational across nine international countries, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
