Google has revealed that it blocked or removed a staggering 483.7 million policy-violating advertisements in India during 2025. According to the company’s 2025 Ads Safety Report released yesterday, the massive cleanup was powered by Gemini, Google’s advanced AI, which has shifted the platform’s enforcement from reactive moderation to real-time prevention.
Globally, the tech giant neutralized over 8.3 billion bad ads and suspended 24.9 million advertiser accounts last year, marking 2025 as a pivotal year in the fight against generative AI-driven scams.
India’s Ad Safety Landscape: The 2025 Data
India remains one of Google’s largest and most complex markets for digital safety. The report highlights a dual crackdown on both individual ads and the entities behind them:
- Ads Blocked: 483.7 million (India-specific).
- Accounts Suspended: 1.7 million advertiser accounts in India were shut down for repeated violations or attempts to circumvent safeguards.
- Top 5 Violations in India:
- Trademarks: Unauthorized use of brand names.
- Financial Services: Misleading loan offers and investment scams.
- Copyright: Infringement on digital property.
- Personalization: Misuse of user data for targeted manipulation.
- Ad Network Abuse: Attempting to trick Google’s ranking or delivery systems.
The ‘Gemini’ Advantage: From Keywords to Intent
The 2025 report emphasizes that traditional keyword-based filters are no longer sufficient to stop modern scammers who use generative AI to churn out deceptive content.
“Our models now analyze hundreds of billions of signals, including account age and behavioral patterns, to stop threats before they reach people,” said Keerat Sharma, VP and General Manager, Ads Privacy and Safety. “Unlike older systems, Gemini understands the intent behind an ad, allowing us to spot malicious content even when it’s designed to evade detection.”
Key Improvements in 2025 Enforcement
| Metric | Impact of Gemini AI |
| Pre-exposure Detection | 99% of bad ads were blocked before a user ever saw them. |
| User Reports | Google acted on 4x more user reports in 2025 compared to 2024. |
| Accuracy | Better intent detection led to an 80% reduction in false alarms (incorrectly suspended legitimate businesses). |
| Real-time Review | Most “Responsive Search Ads” are now reviewed instantly at the moment of submission. |
The Rise of Generative AI Scams
Google noted that 2025 saw a surge in “deepfake” and AI-generated deceptive ads. To counter this, the company expanded its Advertiser Verification Program, requiring business owners in India to validate their identities before running campaigns. Globally, Google specifically neutralized 602 million scam-specific ads that utilized sophisticated social engineering tactics.
As of April 2026, Google continues to roll out new transparency tools, including an updated “About this ad” menu, which allows Indian users to see an advertiser’s verification status and history directly from the search results page.
