Uber claims bike taxi in India not hurting rickshaw business

Uber has recently intensified its defense of the bike taxi segment in India, arguing that it is not cannibalizing the auto-rickshaw business. In a policy blog post shared in April 2026, the ride-hailing giant presented internal data to push for “sensible regulation” as driver unions and state authorities continue to resist the two-wheeler category.

The “Gateway Effect” Argument

Uberโ€™s primary defense is that bike taxis act as a recruitment tool for the platform rather than a replacement for higher-value rides.

  • New User Acquisition: Since 2024, over 500,000 users in Bengaluru alone took their first-ever Uber trip on a bike taxi.
  • Upselling: Crucially, nearly half (50%) of those new users eventually transitioned to using auto-rickshaw and car services, effectively expanding the total market.

The “Natural Experiment” Findings

Uber analyzed data from Bengaluru and Mumbai during periods in 2025 when bike taxi services were temporarily paused due to regulatory bans.

  • Stable Demand: The study found that auto-rickshaw demand continued to grow at a similar pace even when bike taxis were offline.
  • Limited Substitution: Uber claims this proves that bike and auto users are distinct segments. Price-sensitive commuters use bikes for ultra-short “last-mile” trips, while families and commuters seeking comfort stick to autos.

User Preferences: By the Numbers

Uber’s Q4 2025 data reveals that even in cities with high bike-taxi adoption, auto-rickshaws remain the dominant choice:

CityUse Only AutosUse Only BikesUse Both Modes
Bengaluru76%8.8%15%
Mumbai84%< 7% (est.)~9.3%

Regulatory and Market Context

  • Ongoing Resistance: Despite these claims, auto-rickshaw unions in major hubs like Mumbai and Delhi continue to protest, citing “unfair competition” and calling for a total ban on bike taxis.
  • Competitive Pressure: Uber is also fighting for market share against Rapido, which currently leads the Indian bike-taxi market and has recently made its own aggressive push into the auto-rickshaw segment.
  • President’s Outlook: Uber India President Prabhjeet Singh recently noted that the two-wheeler segment is now the company’s fastest-growing category, driven by younger, digital-first riders who prioritize speed in congested traffic.
