Anthropic launched a new beta feature that allows Claude to generate interactive charts, diagrams, and visualizations directly within the chat interface.
Unlike previous “Artifacts” that appeared in a side panel, these new visuals are inline, meaning they appear as part of the conversation and can be manipulated in real-time.
Key Features of the Launch
This update marks a shift from Claude being a text assistant to a visual workspace.
- Interactive Elements: Users can click on portions of a chart to reveal deeper data, toggle sliders (e.g., to see how compound interest changes over different years), or interact with a clickable periodic table.
- Inline Rendering: The visuals appear directly in the flow of text, not in a separate window. They are built using HTML and SVG vector graphics, ensuring they are sharp and responsive.
- Contextual Auto-Detection: Claude automatically determines when a visual would be more helpful than text. For example, if you ask about a building’s weight distribution, it may generate an architectural diagram with directional force vectors.
- Real-time Updates: You can ask for adjustments—like “make the font larger” or “add a new category”—and the visual updates instantly as a “diff” rather than a full re-generation.
Comparison: Visuals vs. Artifacts
Anthropic has clarified that these new inline visuals serve a different purpose than the existing Artifacts feature.
| Feature | Inline Visuals (New) | Claude Artifacts |
| Purpose | Temporary aids for immediate understanding. | Persistent, standalone “finished” work. |
| Placement | Directly in the chat bubble (Inline). | Dedicated Side Panel. |
| Durability | May change or disappear as the chat evolves. | Can be saved, shared, or downloaded. |
| Best Use Case | Explainers, quick trends, step-by-step guides. | Documents, apps, full-scale dashboards. |
Major Use Cases & Examples
Early testers and Anthropic’s demo showcased several “magical” applications:
- The “Tire Change” Guide: CNET reported that asking for a tire change tutorial produces a step-by-step interactive visual that shows the exact placement of a jack and lug nuts.
- Data Analysis: Users can paste messy data, and Claude generates a tabbed, interactive dashboard with line charts, scatter plots, and heatmaps.
- Educational Tools: Ask about geology, and Claude may generate a 3D-style cross-section of a volcano that “erupts” when you toggle a control.
- Workflow Mapping: For business teams, Claude can turn meeting notes into Mermaid diagrams or flowcharts that can be refined through conversation.
Availability
- Plan Types: The feature is currently in Beta but is enabled by default for all users (Free, Pro, and Team).
- Platform: Currently available on the web and desktop apps.
- Mobile Status: While some basic visuals like “recipe cards” and “weather forecasts” render on mobile, the more complex interactive tools are currently limited to desktop due to rendering constraints on the iOS and Android apps.
