YouTube officially launched an experimental in-app AI chatbot called “Ask YouTube” on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. This feature marks a major pivot from traditional keyword-based search to a conversational, generative AI experience that synthesizes information across the entire platform.

The experiment is currently available through YouTube Labs and is scheduled to run until June 8, 2026

1. How “Ask YouTube” Works

Unlike the previous “Ask” button (which only analyzed the specific video you were currently watching), the new Ask YouTube tool is integrated directly into the main search bar and acts as a platform-wide assistant.

  • Conversational Search: Users can type full, natural language questions (e.g., “Plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara”) instead of short keywords.
  • Multimodal Results: The chatbot responds with a combination of:
    • Bulleted Text Summaries: Synthesized insights gathered from multiple video transcripts.
    • Curated Video Recommendations: A mix of long-form videos and Shorts that directly answer the query.
    • Relevant Timestamps: Links that jump to the exact moment a question is answered within a video.
  • Follow-up Interaction: Users can ask follow-up questions (e.g., “Where can I find the best coffee along that route?”) to refine the results without starting a new search.

2. Availability and Eligibility

As of late April 2026, the feature is in a restricted testing phase:

  • Target Audience: Limited to YouTube Premium subscribers.
  • Location & Age: Currently exclusive to users in the United States who are 18 years or older.
  • Language: The experiment is currently running only in English.
  • Opt-in Required: Eligible users must manually enable the feature via the YouTube Labs website or the “Try new features” section in the app.

3. Strategic Impact: Search vs. Discovery

Industry analysts view this as Google’s attempt to transform YouTube into a full-fledged AI search engine, competing directly with platforms like Perplexity and TikTok’s search functionality.

  • For Users: It eliminates the need to “scrub” through dozens of 10-minute videos to find a specific answer, providing an actionable “itinerary” or “how-to” guide instantly.
  • For Creators: This could shift discovery metrics. AI may now surface videos based on the actual spoken content and transcript quality rather than just SEO-optimized titles and tags.
  • For Advertisers: While there are no dedicated ad controls for “Ask YouTube” yet, Google has hinted at future opportunities for sponsored content placements within the AI-generated text summaries.
