Google has officially begun rolling out two of its most requested productivity features to the stable version of Chrome desktop: native Vertical Tabs and a redesigned, immersive Reading Mode.
The update marks a significant shift in Chrome’s interface, moving away from the traditional top-aligned tab bar to help users manage “tab-heavy chaos” and digital clutter.
1. Vertical Tabs: The Sidebar Revolution
After years of seeing competitors like Microsoft Edge and Arc lead with vertical layouts, Google has finally brought the feature to the mainstream.
- How to Enable: Right-click on any empty space in the tab bar or within a Chrome window and select “Show Tabs Vertically.”
- The Benefit: Instead of tabs shrinking into tiny, unreadable icons at the top of the screen, they now line up in a sidebar on the left. This allows you to read the full page titles, making it much easier to find specific tabs when you have dozens open.
- Tab Groups: The vertical layout integrates seamlessly with Tab Groups, allowing you to expand and collapse groups without squeezing the rest of your open pages.
2. Immersive Reading Mode: Full-Page Focus
While Chrome previously had a “Reading Mode” that lived in the side panel, the new update transforms it into a full-page, distraction-free interface.
- How to Enable: Right-click on any article or webpage and select “Open in reading mode.”
- The Transformation: The browser strips away ads, videos, sidebars, and pop-ups, leaving only the core text and essential images.
- Customization: Users can adjust the font (Sans Serif, Serif, Mono), text size, line spacing, and background themes (Light, Sepia, Dark) to suit their reading preferences.
- Read Aloud: The update also includes an improved “Listen to this page” feature with new AI-generated voices and adjustable playback speeds.
3. Comparison: Why the Change?
Google is framing this as a direct response to the “multitasking” needs of modern users who treat their browser as an operating system.
| Feature | Old Chrome Experience | New 2026 Experience |
| Tab Layout | Horizontal (Titles get cut off). | Vertical Sidebar (Full titles visible). |
| Reading Mode | Side panel (Original page remains). | Full-Page Immersive (Distraction-free). |
| Focus | High visual clutter. | AI-powered cleanup and minimalism. |
4. Rollout Timeline
The rollout began on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, for Chrome users on Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS.
- Phased Release: Like most major Chrome updates, this is a phased rollout. If you don’t see the options yet, ensure you are running the latest version of Chrome (v146 or higher).
- Early Access: For those who cannot wait, the features can often be force-enabled by searching for “Vertical Tabs” and “Immersive Reading Mode” in
chrome://flags.
5. Part of the “AI Edge” Era
These interface changes arrive alongside Google’s broader AI Edge push, which recently included the launch of the Eloquent dictation app. By moving tabs to the side and cleaning up webpages, Google is preparing the browser for a future where users interact more with AI side-panels and agentic workflows than traditional top-level menus.
“A little extra focus can make a big difference,” noted Chrome Product Manager Jess Carpenter. “We are making sure you never lose a tab again, no matter how many projects you have running.”
