Apple foldable iPhone faces engineering issues

Apple’s highly anticipated entry into the foldable market has hit a significant roadblock. According to reports from Nikkei Asia and supply chain sources on April 6, the first “iPhone Fold” is encountering unexpected setbacks during its early engineering test production (EVT) phase.

While Apple originally aimed for a high-profile launch in late 2026, these technical hurdles have reportedly forced the company to notify suppliers of potential shipment delays.

1. The Engineering “Snags”

Developing a foldable that meets Apple’s “perfect or nothing” internal standards is proving more difficult than anticipated. Sources familiar with the project suggest the issues are fundamental to the device’s durability.

  • Display Fragility: Early test panels are reportedly failing to meet Apple’s strict requirements for long-term reliability under thousands of folding cycles.
  • Hinge Complexity: Apple is testing a specialized 3D-printed hinge designed to minimize the “crease” visible on competitors’ devices. However, this hinge is currently facing structural integrity issues during stress tests.
  • The “Thinness” Trade-off: Apple is reportedly aiming for a thickness of just 4.5mm when unfolded. This extreme thinness leaves almost zero room for error in the internal component layout, complicating the placement of batteries and logic boards.

2. Impact on the 2026 Roadmap

Before these setbacks, the iPhone Fold was expected to be the crown jewel of the iPhone 18 cycle in September 2026.

Original PlanCurrent Status (April 2026)
Mass ProductionOriginally slated for July 2026.
Release DateSeptember 2026 (with iPhone 18 Pro).
Shipment Target7–8 million units in Year 1.
New RealityLaunch delayed to possibly Dec 2026 or even 2027.
  • The “Split” Launch: Industry analysts, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggest that even if Apple announces the Fold in September 2026 to “show it off,” actual sales may not begin until several months later, similar to the original Apple Watch or Vision Pro rollouts.

3. iPhone Fold: Expected Specs (Rumored)

Despite the delays, the trial production at Foxconn has revealed several key details about what the final device might look like:

  • Dual Displays: A 7.8-inch inner display (similar to an iPad Mini) and a 5.5-inch outer cover screen.
  • Touch ID Side Button: Because of the razor-thin design, Apple reportedly cannot fit the standard Face ID sensors into the folding frame, opting instead for an iPad-style fingerprint sensor in the power button.
  • No Triple Camera: To maintain the 4.5mm thickness, the Fold may lack the periscope telephoto lens found on the 18 Pro models.
  • Price Point: Rumored to start at a premium $1,999 (approx. ₹1.84 lakh).

4. Why Apple is “Bleeding” in Public

Apple is famously late to the foldable party, with Samsung already dominating the category with its Galaxy Z Fold 8 (slated for later this year).

  • The Risk of PR Failure: Unlike Samsung, which weathered the “folding screen” scandals of 2019, Apple’s brand identity is built on hardware that “just works.” A hardware failure on a $2,000 device would be a catastrophic blow to its market reputation.
  • Supply Chain Pressure: Apple has reportedly increased its order for foldable panels to 20 million units from Samsung Display, indicating they expect massive demand once the engineering issues are solved.

5. Competitive Pressure

The delay comes at a bad time as Samsung recently announced its first Trifold smartphone (April 2026), moving the goalposts further just as Apple is struggling to master the basic book-style fold.

“It’s true that more issues than expected have emerged during the early test production phase,” a source told Nikkei. “Additional time will be needed to resolve them and make the necessary structural adjustments.”
