Apple discontinue its ‘Mac Pro’

0

n a quiet but historic end to its most powerful computer line, Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro. The move, confirmed by the company to 9to5Mac on Thursday, brings a close to the 20-year history of the “Pro” tower and marks a definitive shift in Apple’s professional desktop strategy.

As of today, the Mac Pro has been delisted from Apple’s website, and all previous product links now redirect to the main Mac landing page. Apple stated it has no plans to release a successor, making the 2023 M2 Ultra model the final version of the iconic machine.

1. Why the Mac Pro was Retired

The transition to Apple Silicon effectively eliminated the primary reason for the Mac Pro’s existence: its modularity.

  • Internal Competition: The Mac Studio offered nearly identical performance (using the same “Ultra” chips) in a fraction of the size and at a significantly lower price point ($1,999 vs. $6,999).
  • Silicon Limitations: Because Apple’s M-series chips use a “Unified Memory” architecture, the Mac Pro could not support user-upgradeable RAM or discrete third-party GPUs, which were the hallmarks of the original Intel-based towers.
  • The “Studio” Future: Internal reports from late 2025 indicated that Apple had “largely written off” the Mac Pro, viewing the Mac Studio as the superior solution for modern professional workflows.

2. The Current “Pro” Desktop Hierarchy

With the Mac Pro gone, Apple has repositioned its desktop lineup. Professional users requiring maximum power are now directed toward the Mac Studio.

ModelLatest Chip OptionsPrimary Use Case
Mac miniM5, M5 ProGeneral productivity, coding, light media work.
iMac (24-inch)M5All-in-one for home and creative offices.
Mac StudioM4 Max, M3 UltraHigh-end rendering, 8K video, AI training.

Note: While the Mac Studio currently uses M3/M4 chips, a refreshed M5 Ultra Mac Studio is widely expected to debut at WWDC in June 2026 to fill the performance gap left by the Mac Pro.

3. What Happens to Legacy Support?

Apple has committed to supporting existing Mac Pro owners, but the options for new hardware are now limited.

  • After-Sales Support: Standard hardware repairs and software updates will continue for the foreseeable future.
  • Refurbished Market: While new units are no longer sold, the Apple Certified Refurbished store continues to list M2 Ultra Mac Pro units (while supplies last) for those who specifically require PCIe expansion slots for storage or audio cards.
  • Pro Display XDR: In a related move, Apple also discontinued the Pro Display XDR earlier this month, replacing it with new, high-end Studio Display variants.

4. End of an Era: “Made in the USA”

The Mac Pro was notable for being Apple’s only major product assembled in the United States (at a facility in Austin, Texas).

To maintain its domestic manufacturing presence, Apple announced in February that it would begin building the Mac mini at a new facility in Houston, Texas, later in 2026.
