X launches standalone ‘XChat’ app

Elon Musk’s X Corp. officially launched XChat, a standalone messaging app, on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Positioned as a direct rival to WhatsApp and Signal, the app unbundles X’s Direct Messaging (DM) features into a dedicated, privacy-first platform.

The launch marks a notable shift in strategy: instead of keeping every feature within the “Everything App,” X is now spinning off specialized services into independent applications.

1. Key Features & Privacy

XChat is built from the ground up on Rust and emphasizes “Bitcoin-style” security.

  • Zero-Invite Onboarding: You sign in with your existing X account. Your entire network—friends, creators, and colleagues—is already there, eliminating the need to swap phone numbers.
  • Full End-to-End Encryption: Every message, call, and file is encrypted with a unique key pair protected by a device-only PIN. X Corp. claims even they cannot access your conversations.
  • No Tracking or Ads: The app is currently free of advertising and data-tracking mechanisms, a rare stance for a major social media spin-off.
  • Advanced Chat Tools: Supports disappearing messages, message editing/deletion for all participants, and screenshot blocking/alerts.
  • Community Integration: XChat is reportedly set to replace the “Communities” feature on the main X app, which has struggled with spam.

2. Platform Availability (April 2026)

As of its launch week, XChat has a significant limitation regarding its user base:

PlatformStatus
iOS (iPhone/iPad)Live (Requires iOS 26.0 or later)
AndroidUnavailable (No release date announced)
Desktop/WebUnavailable

Security Warning: Since the app is currently iOS-exclusive, the company has warned users to ignore any “early access” links for Android, which are likely scams.

3. The “Everything App” Pivot

Financial analysts suggest this “unbundling” serves two purposes:

  1. IPO Readiness: Just as the SpaceX debt consolidation cleared its balance sheet (as seen in recent filings), spinning off XChat allows X Corp. to prove the standalone value of its messaging ecosystem.
  2. Multitasking: By moving chats to a separate app, users can browse the X feed on their main app while keeping a floating or separate conversation open in XChat, similar to the “Notification Bubbles” currently being tested by WhatsApp.
