Meta is officially developing an optional premium subscription for its messaging platform, titled WhatsApp Plus.
While WhatsApp has been free for personal use since 2016, this “Plus” tier marks a return to a monetization model aimed at power users who want advanced customization and productivity tools.
Key Features of WhatsApp Plus
Early beta findings (version 2.26.9.6) reveal that the subscription will focus on personalization without restricting the app’s core messaging or privacy features.
| Feature | WhatsApp Plus (Proposed) | Standard (Free) |
| Pinned Chats | Up to 20 chats | Max 3 chats |
| App Icons | 14 unique designs | Standard logo only |
| UI Customization | 19 accent colors & themes | Light/Dark mode only |
| Ringtones | Exclusive “Plus” call alerts | Default system sounds |
| Expressive Tools | Subscriber-only stickers & reactions | Standard set only |
- Productivity Boost: The jump to 20 pinned chats is designed specifically for professionals and “heavy” users who manage dozens of active threads simultaneously.
- Aesthetic Control: Subscribers can modify the look of tabs, filters, and action buttons using a dedicated palette of 19 colors.
Waitlist and Rollout
WhatsApp has begun testing the rollout via a notification waitlist system.
- Discovery: Eligible beta testers are seeing a banner in their “Settings” or “Sticker Keyboard” inviting them to join the waitlist.
- Availability: The feature is currently in active development for both Android and iOS.
- Optional Nature: Meta has emphasized that core functionsโtexting, voice/video calls, and end-to-end encryptionโwill remain free for all users.
Context: The “SIM Binding” Mandate (India)
Interestingly, the launch of WhatsApp Plus coincides with a major regulatory shift in India. As of March 1, 2026, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has mandated SIM binding for all WhatsApp users in India.
- Frequent Logouts: To prevent fraud, WhatsApp now verifies every 6 hours that the physical SIM is present in the primary phone.
- Impact on Linked Devices: If you use WhatsApp Web or a tablet, you will now be automatically logged out every 6 hours and must re-authenticate using your primary device.
Pricing and Timeline
Meta has not yet announced a official price or a specific global launch date for WhatsApp Plus. However, industry analysts expect the service to follow a low-cost monthly model (estimated between $0.99 and $2.99) to ensure high volume across its 3 billion users.
