In a move to lower the barriers for entry to its platform, WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature called “Guest Chats” on its latest beta versions for Android and iOS. Reported first by WABetaInfo on March 16, 2026, the feature allows registered users to start conversations with individuals who do not have a WhatsApp account or the app installed.
How It Works: The Secure Invite Link
The “Guest” experience is designed to be a temporary, web-based bridge rather than a full account setup.
- The Invitation: A WhatsApp user generates a secure invite link from the “Invite a friend” section or the bottom of their contact list.
- The Landing Page: The recipient receives the link (via SMS, email, or other apps) and opens it in a browser.
- The Choice: They are presented with two options: Download WhatsApp or Continue as Guest.
- The Session: Choosing “Guest” opens a session in WhatsApp Web (on mobile or desktop) where they simply enter a display name to begin chatting.
Key Features and Limitations
To maintain its “temporary” nature, Guest Chats come with strict guardrails to distinguish them from permanent accounts.
- End-to-End Encrypted: WhatsApp generates a unique identifier for the guest session to create an encryption key, ensuring the conversation remains private.
- Text-Only: Currently, the feature is limited to basic text messages. It does not support media sharing (photos/videos), stickers, GIFs, voice notes, or voice/video calls.
- Auto-Expiration: A guest chat will automatically expire after 10 days of inactivity. Once expired, a new invite link must be generated to restart the conversation.
- “Guest” Labeling: The interface clearly labels the non-user as a “Guest” to ensure the inviter knows the identity is not verified by a phone number.
| Feature | Regular Chat | Guest Chat |
| Account Required | Yes | No |
| Encryption | End-to-End | End-to-End |
| Media Sharing | Full Support | None |
| Voice/Video Calls | Supported | Not Supported |
| Expiry | Persistent | 10 Days Inactivity |
Safety and Control
The inviter remains in full control of the interaction. Users can block guest accounts just like regular contacts. However, because guest identities are not verified, WhatsApp warns users to verify the person’s identity through other means before sharing sensitive information, as an invite link could theoretically be accessed by an unintended recipient if shared insecurely.
Availability
As of March 17, 2026, “Guest Chats” is rolling out to a limited number of beta testers on Android (v2.25.22.13) and iOS (via TestFlight). A wider public rollout is expected later in 2026, though Meta has not yet confirmed a specific launch date.
