WhatsApp officially announced the launch of in-app mobile recharges in India on Thursday, April 23, 2026. This strategic expansion allows users to browse plans and top up prepaid connections without leaving the chat interface.
The feature is being rolled out in phases and is powered by PayU, marking a significant step in Meta’s plan to transform WhatsApp into an “all-in-one” utility app for the Indian market.

1. How to Use Mobile Recharge on WhatsApp
To make financial services more discoverable, WhatsApp has introduced a dedicated rupee (โน) icon on the home screen (Android/iOS).
- Tap the โน Icon: Found on the main screen or within any 1:1 chat thread.
- Select “Mobile Prepaid Recharge”: This option is now listed alongside standard UPI payments.
- Enter/Select Number: You can recharge your own number or select a contact from your list.
- Confirm Operator & Plan: The system supports Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vi (Vodafone Idea). Browse and select your desired data or talktime plan.
- Complete Payment: Pay using WhatsApp Pay (UPI), Debit Cards, or Credit Cards.
2. Strategic Partnership: The Role of PayU
While the front-end experience is native to WhatsApp, the back-end payment processing is managed by PayU.
- Phased Rollout: The service is currently available to a subset of users and will reach all 500+ million Indian users over the next two weeks.
- Embedded Finance: According to PayU, this partnership aims to capture “high-frequency digital transactions” by placing them exactly where users spend their time.
3. The “Super-App” Competition
The launch of mobile recharges puts WhatsApp in direct competition with dominant payment apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm.
| Feature | WhatsApp (2026) | PhonePe / Google Pay |
| User Base (India) | ~500M+ | ~200Mโ300M+ |
| Context | Social/Messaging First | Transaction/Utility First |

4. Expanding Utility Ecosystem
Beyond mobile recharges, WhatsAppโs Indian “Utility Hub” now includes:
- Bharat Connect (BBPS): Users can pay for electricity, water, LPG, and FASTag by sending a “Hi” to the official Bharat Connect channel.
- Transit Services: Native ticketing for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai Metros.
- Government Integration: Direct access to MyGov services and Aadhaar/PAN downloads via chatbots.
