SK hynix develops LPDDR6

0

SK hynix officially announced the world’s first successful development of LPDDR6 DRAM using its sixth-generation 10nm-class (1c) process technology.

This breakthrough marks the start of the LPDDR6 era, specifically engineered to handle the massive data processing demands of on-device AI for next-generation smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Performance vs. LPDDR5X

The new 16Gb LPDDR6 chips deliver significant jumps in both speed and efficiency compared to the outgoing LPDDR5X standard.

  • 33% Faster Processing: The initial LPDDR6 modules feature a base operating speed of over 10.7 Gbps, significantly exceeding the 8.5 Gbps peak of standard LPDDR5X.
  • 20% Better Power Efficiency: By utilizing a new sub-channel structure (which only powers active data paths) and DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling), the chips drastically reduce battery drain during both heavy gaming and idle states.
  • Targeting 14.4 Gbps: While the launch speed is 10.7 Gbps, the LPDDR6 architecture is designed to eventually reach data rates of up to 14.4 Gbps.

Key Technical Innovations

FeatureImplementationBenefit
1c Process6th-gen 10nm-class technology.Higher density and lower power footprint.
Dual Sub-ChannelsTwo 12-bit sub-channels per device.Improved latency and smarter data handling for AI workloads.
Reliability (RAS)Enhanced Error Correction Code (ECC) and Metadata support.Greater system stability, reducing crashes during complex AI tasks.
On-Device AI FocusLocalized data processing (KV Cache optimization).Faster AI responses without relying on cloud servers.

Availability and Production Timeline

SK hynix has laid out a rapid schedule to get these chips into consumer hands:

  • Validation Completed: Following a preview at CES 2026 in January, the company confirmed on March 10 that it has successfully completed development certification.
  • Mass Production Preparation: Currently underway and expected to be finalized in the first half of 2026.
  • Shipments to Customers: Scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.
  • Market Debut: Expect the first flagship “AI Smartphones” and “Copilot+ PCs” featuring LPDDR6 to arrive in early 2027.

The Competitive Landscape

The announcement places SK hynix at the forefront of the memory race. While Samsung showcased LPDDR6 prototypes at CES 2026 using its older 1b process, SK hynix’s use of the more advanced 1c node suggests it may hold a slight edge in power efficiency for the first wave of retail products.
