Sarvam AI to raise $250 million at $1.5 billion valuation

In what is set to be the largest private funding round for an Indian AI company to date, Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI is in advanced negotiations to raise between $250 million and $300 million. The round is expected to value the startup at $1.5 billion, officially marking its entry into the “Unicorn” club with a staggering 7x valuation surge in under two years.

The deal is particularly significant due to its high-profile strategic backers, including global chip giant Nvidia, venture capital powerhouse Accel, and Indian IT major HCLTech.

1. Strategic Consortium: More Than Just Capital

Unlike traditional venture rounds, this capital infusion represents a “convergence” of infrastructure, services, and growth expertise.

  • Nvidiaโ€™s “Sovereign AI” Bet: Nvidiaโ€™s participation is seen as a move to deepen its footprint in Indiaโ€™s domestic AI ecosystem. Sarvam already builds on Nvidiaโ€™s stack, and this investment ensures that India’s foundational models remain optimized for Nvidia’s full-stack platform.
  • HCLTechโ€™s Enterprise Bridge: As an IT services giant, HCLTechโ€™s entry signals a shift where domestic IT firms become strategic investors. HCLTech plans to deploy Sarvamโ€™s locally trained, production-ready models across its global enterprise client base.
  • Accelโ€™s Global Scale: Accel is expected to provide the governance and market-access discipline needed to take Sarvamโ€™s “Indic-first” models to global markets.

2. Product Momentum: The “Sarvam-105B” Factor

Investor interest in Sarvam reached a fever pitch following the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026, where the company unveiled its most ambitious models to date.

  • Homegrown Foundation Models: Sarvam launched Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, the first large language models (LLMs) trained entirely from scratch in India, supporting 22 Indian languages.
  • Multimodal Ecosystem: Beyond text, the company introduced Sarvam Vision (advanced OCR), Sarvam Dub (automated translation/dubbing), and the Indus beta app.
  • Hardware Ambitions: The startup also debuted Sarvam Kaze, a pair of AI-powered smart glasses designed for real-time multilingual assistance.

3. The “IndiaAI” Mission Synergy

Sarvam has emerged as the primary beneficiary of the government’s โ‚น10,372 crore IndiaAI Mission, which aims to build sovereign compute capacity.

  1. Compute Access: The startup has secured an allocation of 4,096 Nvidia H100 GPUs through Yotta Data Services.
  2. Financial Support: Sarvam has received nearly โ‚น99 crore in subsidies and grants as part of the mission’s effort to foster indigenous foundational models.
  3. Voice-First Commerce: Just yesterday (March 24), Sarvam announced a partnership with Razorpay to launch voice-led conversational commerce, allowing users to discover products and pay using natural language via the Swiggy app on the Indus platform.

“If we’re not ambitious, we’ll only build small things,” noted co-founder Vivek Raghavan. “We are moving from being AI adopters to being AI creators for the next billion users.”
