Bloomberg and Variety confirmed that Netflix is set to pay up to $600 million to acquire InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup co-founded by Oscar-winning actor and director Ben Affleck.
The deal, which was reportedly finalized just days after Netflix withdrew from a bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery, marks one of the streaming giant’s largest and most significant moves into proprietary production technology.
What is InterPositive?
Founded by Affleck in 2022, InterPositive is a “filmmaker-first” AI company. Unlike generative AI tools (like Sora or Midjourney) that create imagery from text, InterPositive focuses on augmented post-production.
- The “Cinematic Logic” Engine: The AI is trained on proprietary datasets from real film sets to understand lighting, continuity, and camera physics.
- Core Capabilities:
- Automated Continuity: Detecting and fixing errors across different takes (e.g., a glass of water that is suddenly full in the next shot).
- Digital Relighting: Adjusting the lighting of a scene after it has been shot to match the tone of the surrounding footage.
- Missing Shot Synthesis: “Repairing” scenes where specific coverage might be missing or corrupted without needing expensive reshoots.
- Frame-Accurate Reframing: Intelligently adjusting shots for different aspect ratios (mobile vs. TV) while maintaining the director’s intended focus.
Deal Structure & Strategic Shift
The acquisition is unusual for Netflix, which typically prefers building technology in-house.
| Component | Detail |
| Total Value | Up to $600 Million (second only to the $700M Roald Dahl acquisition). |
| Payment Structure | A mix of upfront cash and significant performance-based earnouts tied to the tool’s integration across Netflix’s 2026–2027 slate. |
| The Team | All 16 engineers and researchers from InterPositive will join Netflix Research. |
| Affleck’s Role | Ben Affleck will join Netflix as a Senior Advisor, helping bridge the gap between AI engineers and Hollywood directors. |
The “Fincher” Test Case
The technology has already been “battle-tested” in the industry. Director David Fincher reportedly utilized InterPositive’s tools for his upcoming Netflix feature starring Brad Pitt. The tools allowed the production to “lock” the edit significantly faster by automating the tedious color-matching and technical cleanup that usually takes VFX teams months to complete.
Why It Matters for the Industry
Analysts estimate that if InterPositive is deployed across Netflix’s $17 billion annual content budget, it could reduce post-production costs by 15% to 25%.
“This isn’t about replacing actors; it’s about industrial efficiency. If you can shave two months off the post-production schedule of a ‘Stranger Things’ or ‘Wednesday’ season, the ROI on a $600 million acquisition is achieved almost instantly.”
