Instagram Tests Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for Reels to Boost Multitasking

0

Instagram, owned by Meta, is currently testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for its Reels. The new mode lets users watch Reels in a floating, movable mini-window—even while using other apps. This feature, akin to TikTok’s and YouTube’s PiP, is being trialed with a limited group of users. The test was confirmed by Meta and discovered by app researcher Radu Oncescu via Threads. The Times of India

How It Works

Eligible users receive a pop-up inviting them to “Try Picture in Picture.” Once activated, the Reels continue playing in a small overlay window, even after exiting the app. Controls for managing PiP can be accessed via the app’s menu. The feature aims to encourage continued engagement by allowing creators’ content to remain visible during multitasking

Why This Matters

  • Enhanced Multitasking: Users can reply to messages, browse other apps, and stay engaged with Reels simultaneously.
  • Better Content Retention: PiP could help users stick around for longer Reels, boosting viewership and engagement metrics.
  • Competitive Alignment: Instagram joins TikTok and YouTube in bringing PiP to short-form video, reinforcing its position in the market.

What Users Can Expect

  • Activation via an in-app pop-up prompt
  • Toggle control in the sharing or playback settings
  • A floating window overlay that persists beyond the Instagram app
  • No confirmed timeline yet for a broader roll-out
