Google will now gives you 24-hours to think before sideloading apps

0

Google is introducing a mandatory 24-hour waiting period for sideloading apps from unverified developers. This “advanced flow” is a high-friction security measure designed to break the “spell” of social engineering scams that rely on manufactured urgency.

How the 24-Hour Process Works

If you want to install an APK from a developer who has not gone through Google’s official verification process, you must navigate a multi-step sequence:

  1. Enable Developer Mode: Go to Settings > About Phone and tap the Build Number seven times.
  2. The “Anti-Coaching” Check: A prompt will appear asking if someone is currently instructing you to disable your security settings (targeting scammers who stay on the phone with victims).
  3. Mandatory Restart: You must restart your device, which effectively cuts off any active remote-access sessions or phone calls.
  4. The 24-Hour Countdown: An invisible “protective waiting period” begins. You cannot proceed with the unverified install until a full day has passed.
  5. Re-authentication: After 24 hours, you must verify your identity using biometrics (fingerprint/face unlock) or your PIN.
  6. Installation Choice: You can then choose to allow unverified installs for seven days or indefinitely.

Why the Change?

Google is positioning this as a tool against “high-pressure social engineering.” Scammers often trick users into installing malicious banking apps by claiming their accounts are under immediate attack. By forcing a 24-hour delay and a phone reboot, Google aims to give victims time to realize the threat isn’t real.

Who is Exempt?

  • Verified Developers: If an app comes from a developer who has submitted their ID and paid the $25 registration fee, the 24-hour wait does not apply.
  • Students & Hobbyists: Google is introducing “Limited Distribution Accounts” that allow sharing apps with up to 20 devices without full verification or fees.
  • Power Users (ADB): Installing apps via the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) from a computer will still bypass this delay, preserving the workflow for developers.

Timeline of the Rollout

  • August 2026: The “Advanced Flow” (24-hour wait) becomes available globally.
  • September 2026: Strict developer verification enforcement begins in Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand, with a global expansion following in 2027.
