Google AI Mode now opens source links without leaving chat

0

Google has officially rolled out a major productivity update to its AI Mode in Chrome, introducing a native “side-by-side” browsing experience. The update addresses one of the primary friction points of AI-assisted research: the constant “tab-hopping” between the chat interface and the cited source articles.

Starting today, when a user clicks a source link within a Gemini response in AI Mode, the webpage will open in a dedicated side panel on the right, keeping the conversation active on the left.

1. The ‘Side-by-Side’ Experience

Previously, clicking a citation would launch a new browser tab, forcing users to navigate away from the AI’s context. The new layout transforms Chrome into a dual-pane research workstation:

  • Context Retention: Users can read the full text of an article while simultaneously asking follow-up questions in the AI panel (e.g., “Based on the article on the right, what are the three main risks mentioned?”).
  • Live Highlighting: As you scroll through the source page, the AI can highlight relevant sections that it used to formulate its original answer.
  • Multi-Page Research: Users can open multiple links from a single response, switching between them in the side panel without ever losing their chat history.

2. ‘Tab Search’ and Contextual Plus Menu

In addition to the side panel, Google is introducing a powerful new “Plus” menu in the search box of both the New Tab page and the AI Mode interface.

  • Search Your Open Tabs: By clicking the + button, users can select specific open tabs to serve as the “grounding data” for a query. For example, you can select three different laptop review tabs and ask, “Compare the battery life of the laptops in these three tabs.”
  • Multimodal Context: The menu also allows for the instant attachment of PDFs, local images, or files from Google Drive, combining them with live web tabs for complex data synthesis.

3. Availability and Rollout

While the Personal Intelligence feature (which connects Gemini to your Gmail and Photos) launched globally—including in India—on April 15, the specific Side-by-Side browsing feature is currently live only in the United States.

Google VPs Robby Stein and Mike Torres confirmed that the side-panel update will expand to other regions, including India and Europe, in the coming weeks. For now, users in India can still use the “Tab-Aware” search if they have the AI Mode enabled via the Chrome Omnibox or the dedicated AI Mode tab on Google.com.

Industry Impact: Analysts are calling this the “death of the back button.” By keeping users within the AI ecosystem while they browse external publisher content, Google is attempting to solve the attribution crisis while making Chrome the most efficient browser for high-stakes professional research.
