Global Firms Warned: Using Huawei AI Chips May Violate U.S. Export Laws

The U.S. Department of Commerce has issued a global warning to companies, stating that the use of Huawei’s Ascend AI chips could breach U.S. export control laws. This advisory emphasizes that employing these chips, even outside U.S. borders, may lead to legal consequences due to their development involving U.S.-origin technology.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) highlighted that Huawei’s Ascend 910B, 910C, and 910D chips are likely designed or produced using American software or equipment. Consequently, any utilization of these chips without proper authorization could result in criminal penalties, administrative actions, or fines .

This move is part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to curb China’s advancements in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies. By restricting the use of Huawei’s AI chips globally, the U.S. aims to limit the company’s influence and ensure that American technology does not support entities considered a national security risk .Financial Times

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the U.S. for “abusing export control measures,” arguing that such actions threaten global semiconductor supply chains and China’s technological interests .

Companies worldwide are now advised to assess their supply chains and ensure compliance with U.S. export regulations to avoid potential legal ramifications.
