In a major shake-up of the AI leaderboard, Anthropic’s Claude has officially surged past DeepSeek, Grok, and Gemini in daily active users (DAU) on mobile devices for the first time.
According to market intelligence data from Similarweb and Appfigures released this week, Claude recorded a staggering 11.3 million daily active users on March 2, marking an 183% increase from the start of the year. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT still holds the overall global lead with over 250 million daily users, Claude’s rapid ascent has officially crowned it the “fastest-growing challenger” of 2026.
1. The New AI Hierarchy (Mobile DAUs)
The landscape has shifted dramatically in just the last 30 days. Claude’s growth has allowed it to leapfrog the established “middle tier” of AI assistants.
| AI Platform | Daily Active Users (March 2026) | Growth Trend (Since Jan) |
| ChatGPT | 250.5 Million | Stable / Slight Decline (-5.6%) |
| Claude | 11.3 Million | Surging (+183%) |
| Gemini | ~9.8 Million | Steady Growth |
| Grok | ~3.4 Million | Platform-locked (X/Twitter) |
| DeepSeek | ~3.2 Million | Declining (post-January peak) |
The “U.S. App Store” Flip
On March 2, 2026, Claude achieved a symbolic victory by surpassing ChatGPT in daily U.S. downloads. Claude recorded 149,000 new installations in a single day, compared to 124,000 for ChatGPT. Anthropic also reported that they are currently adding over 1 million new sign-ups per day across all platforms.
2. Why is Everyone Switching to Claude?
Analysts point to three distinct “catalysts” that fueled this March surge:
- The “Ethics” Effect: Anthropic’s highly public refusal to allow its AI to be used by the U.S. Department of War for autonomous weapons led to a wave of “ethical migration.” Many users viewed the company’s fallout with the Pentagon as a badge of safety and reliability.
- Claude Code Dominance: The May 2025 launch of Claude Code has finally matured. A recent survey from The Pragmatic Engineer found that Claude is now the #1 most-used tool for developers, overtaking GitHub Copilot. This high-value user base has brought their professional habits into the mobile app.
- Computer Use & “Dispatch”: The March 23 launch of the “Computer Use” feature (allowing Claude to control your Mac) and the Dispatch mobile tool has turned the app into a remote control for office work, driving massive “utility-based” retention.
3. The “DeepClaude” Phenomenon
Interestingly, a significant portion of the growth comes from “Power Users” who are utilizing DeepClaude—a hybrid framework that combines Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s writing with DeepSeek R1’s reasoning.
- Specialization: Users are increasingly using Claude for “Augmentation” (creative collaboration and complex coding) rather than just “Automation” (simple fact-finding).
- Demographics: Unlike the generalist ChatGPT, Claude’s user base is heavily skewed toward technical professionals, with 34% of all tasks being math or code-related.
“Claude has successfully transitioned from an ‘AI for researchers’ to the ‘AI for workers,'” noted one market analyst. “They are capturing the high-intent, high-utility segment that OpenAI used to own.”
