China open-source world’s first quantum operating system

0

China officially released Origin Pilot, making it the world’s first fully downloadable, open-source quantum operating system. Developed by the Hefei-based Origin Quantum Computing Technology Co., the move represents a significant shift in the global quantum race—transitioning from proprietary, cloud-gated models to an open ecosystem.

While Western tech giants like IBM and Google offer powerful quantum frameworks (Qiskit and Cirq), those are primarily accessed via the cloud. Origin Pilot is the first full OS that researchers and developers can download for local deployment.

Technical Capabilities of Origin Pilot

Described by developers as the “soft heart” of the quantum stack, Origin Pilot acts as the bridge between high-level quantum software and the delicate physical hardware.

  • Universal Compatibility: Uniquely, the OS is compatible with the three dominant quantum hardware pathways: superconducting qubits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms.
  • Parallel Tasking: It supports the parallel execution of quantum tasks, which significantly multiplies the efficiency of limited quantum resources.
  • Auto-Calibration: One of its most advanced features is automatic qubit calibration, reducing the need for manual, time-consuming tuning of the “finicky” quantum bits.
  • Hybrid Computing: It functions as an integrated quantum-classical-intelligent (AI) system, coordinating tasks between traditional CPUs and quantum processors.

The “Origin Wukong” Integration

Origin Pilot is already the primary operating system for the Origin Wukong series—China’s third-generation superconducting quantum computer.

MetricOrigin Wukong Performance (2026)
Qubit Count72 functional qubits (+ 126 coupler qubits)
Global ReachOver 30 million visits from 120+ countries.
Job CountSuccessfully executed over 339,000 quantum jobs.
Active UsersReports indicate American researchers are among the most active users of the platform.

Strategic Rationale: The “Open Gambit”

The decision to open-source a production-grade quantum OS is a calculated move within China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which identifies quantum technology as a top-priority “future industry.”

  • Standard Setting: By giving the software away for free, China aims to establish Origin Pilot as the global de facto standard for quantum development, much like Linux did for classical servers.
  • Technology Independence: Developing a sovereign “full-stack” (from chips to OS) ensures China’s quantum ecosystem remains resilient against international export restrictions.
  • Talent Magnet: Lowering the barrier to entry attracts global talent and universities into a Chinese-built software ecosystem, potentially accelerating innovation beyond what a closed-door model could achieve.

Two Versions for Release

To cater to different segments of the market, Origin Pilot was launched in two distinct editions:

  1. Community Edition: Free to download; focuses on noise mitigation, hybrid compilation, and open research.
  2. Enterprise Edition: Includes advanced Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) tools and security features for industrial-scale deployment in sectors like finance and defense.
