Mumbai-based South Indian dosa chain Benne is reportedly in advanced talks to raise ₹35–₹40 crore at a valuation of ₹350 crore. The funding round is expected to be led by Claypond Capital, the family office of billionaire healthcare magnate Ranjan Pai (Chairman of Manipal Group).
The deal marks a significant milestone for the young brand, which has quickly become a cultural phenomenon in Mumbai’s food scene.
1. Deal Details & Investor Interest
This investment would represent Claypond Capital’s first foray into the Food & Beverage (F&B) sector.
- Primary Investor: Claypond Capital (Ranjan Pai’s family office).
- Funding Amount: ₹35–₹40 crore.
- Valuation: ₹350 crore.
- Previous Funding: The brand previously raised early-stage capital from the venture capital firm Peercheque.
2. The Founders & The “Benne” Story
“Benne” (which means “butter” in Kannada) was founded in May 2024 by a husband-wife duo with no prior background in the hospitality industry.
- Founders: Akhil Iyer (a film producer) and Shriya Narayan (a psychologist).
- Origin: Driven by a craving for authentic Bengaluru-style “Davangere” benne dosa, the couple opened their first 250 sq. ft. darshini-style outlet in Bandra.
- Expansion: In less than two years, the brand has expanded to Juhu and Delhi (GK). A massive 4,400 sq. ft. flagship outlet is currently slated to open in Chowpatty (South Mumbai).
3. The “Celebrity” Factor
Benne’s rapid rise from a local eatery to a ₹350 crore brand was fueled by viral social media presence and high-profile visitors.
- Celebrity Endorsements: The brand gained immense visibility after actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were spotted dining there.
- The “Kohli” Effect: Cricketer Virat Kohli and actor Anushka Sharma have also visited, leading to “snake-like” queues that industrialist Harsh Goenka recently noted are sometimes longer than the lines at Wankhede Stadium.
4. Operational Challenges (April 2026)
Despite the funding buzz, the brand is currently navigating a sector-wide commercial LPG shortage caused by energy disruptions in West Asia.
- Limited Menus: Some outlets have been forced to run at reduced capacity or close temporarily because electric fryers and induction cooktops have failed to replicate the specific “crisp yet pillowy” texture of a gas-fired benne dosa.
- Chowpatty Launch: The upcoming South Mumbai launch has faced minor delays as the founders wait for a steady fuel supply to ensure the dosa’s consistency.
