Apple is planning a major overhaul of the iPhone Camera app in iOS 27, introducing a dedicated “Siri Mode” to sit alongside traditional options like Photo, Video, and Portrait.

The move aims to solve the “discoverability” issue of Apple’s existing Visual Intelligence features, moving them from hidden gestures and physical buttons into the core camera interface.

1. The Revamped Interface

In the new Siri Mode, the camera’s shutter button reportedly transforms into the Apple Intelligence logo, signaling that the device is in an active “AI-thinking” state rather than a standard photography state.

  • Real-Time Analysis: Unlike standard photos, Siri Mode will analyze the viewfinder in real-time to provide instant context and actionable data.
  • Voice & Visual Fusion: Users will be able to point their camera at an object and speak to Siri simultaneously to ask specific questions about what the lens sees.

2. New “Visual Intelligence” Capabilities

The update expands beyond simple object recognition to include high-utility productivity tools:

  • Dietary Tracking: Users can scan nutrition labels on food packaging; the AI will parse the data and offer to log calories or macros directly into the Health or third-party fitness apps.
  • Contact Extraction: Pointing the camera at a business card or document will allow Siri to automatically populate a new contact card in the address book.
  • Digital Wallet Integration: The mode can recognize paper event tickets or membership cards and instantly generate a digital pass for the Apple Wallet.
  • Enhanced Search: Siri will continue to use ChatGPT (for complex reasoning) and Google Image Search (for object identification) as backend partners for visual queries.

3. The Path to Wearables

Industry analysts at Bloomberg suggest that perfecting Siri Mode on the iPhone is a “testbed” for Apple’s future hardware roadmap.

  • AI Companion Gear: Apple is reportedly testing concepts for smart glasses, a wearable pendant, and camera-equipped AirPods.
  • Contextual Awareness: The goal is to train Siri to act as a hands-free AI companion that can interpret the physical world through these sensors, with the iPhone’s new camera mode serving as the initial user interface.

4. Release Timeline

Apple is expected to officially unveil the Siri Mode and the broader iOS 27 update at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, which begins on June 8, 2026.
