Anthropic open its first office in India

Anthropic officially opened its first India office in Bengaluru, marking its second base in the Asia-Pacific region after Tokyo. The launch coincided with the India AI Impact Summit, where CEO Dario Amodei highlighted that India is now the second-largest market for its AI assistant, Claude, globally.

The expansion comes as Anthropic’s revenue run-rate in India has doubled since October 2025, driven by intense demand for “agentic AI” and coding solutions.

Leadership and Local Operations

The new Bengaluru office, located in the Domlur area, will serve as a hub for hiring local talent across engineering, customer success, and policy roles.

Key Enterprise & Startup Partnerships

Anthropic announced a slate of high-profile collaborations with Indian companies that are moving beyond AI experimentation into production-grade deployments.

  • Air India: Utilizing Claude Code to help developers ship custom software faster and integrate “agentic” capabilities across its airline operations.
  • Cred: The fintech giant reported 2x faster feature delivery and a 10% improvement in test coverage using Anthropicโ€™s developer tools.
  • Cognizant: Deploying Claude to its 350,000 global employees to modernize legacy IT systems and accelerate software development for clients.
  • Razorpay: Integrating Claude into its core risk management and operational decision-making systems.
  • Swiggy: Leveraging the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to allow users to order groceries and book dining reservations directly through the Claude interface.

The “Sovereign AI” & Social Impact Push

Anthropic is also focusing on localized solutions and ethical AI deployment within the Indian context:

  1. Indic Language Support: The company has curated training data for 10 major Indian languages (including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu) to improve fluency and cultural context.
  2. Education (Pratham): Partnering to pilot an “Anytime Testing Machine” powered by Claude, reaching 1,500 students across 20 schools, with plans to scale to 100 schools by year-end.
  3. Judicial Access (Adalat AI): Supporting a WhatsApp-based helpline that provides court case updates, document summaries, and legal translations in local languages.
  4. Agriculture: Working with Digital Green to pilot AI solutions for farm management and supply chain optimization.

Legal “Name” Dispute

Interestingly, the launch day was met with a minor legal hurdle. A Belagavi-based software firm, Anthropic Software Private Limited (registered in 2017), has filed a suit claiming prior rights to the name “Anthropic” in India. A local court issued a fresh summons to the new Bengaluru office for a hearing scheduled on March 9, 2026.

“India represents one of the world’s most promising opportunities to bring the benefits of responsible AI to vastly more people… Already, it’s home to extraordinary technical talent and a proven track record of using technology to improve lives.” โ€” Irina Ghose, MD, Anthropic India.
