Amazon India officially announced a massive scale-up of its quick commerce service, Amazon Now, on Monday, April 27, 2026. The company is expanding the service to 100 new cities across the country, marking a definitive pivot toward the ultra-fast delivery segment to challenge incumbents like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart.

This expansion is backed by a fresh investment of ₹2,800 crore, which will be used to bolster fulfillment infrastructure and associate welfare.

1. The Rollout: Beyond Metros

Previously limited to major hubs like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, Amazon Now is moving into Tier-1 and Tier-2 markets.

  • Key New Cities: The expansion includes Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Meerut, Mysuru, Panipat, Kochi, Amritsar, Mangaluru, and Visakhapatnam.
  • Infrastructure Surge: To support “delivery within minutes,” Amazon is scaling up to more than 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs)—often referred to as dark stores—across these 100 cities.
  • Winding Down “Fresh”: Earlier in April 2026, reports indicated that Amazon began winding down its Amazon Fresh (4-to-24-hour delivery) service in 10–15 major cities to consolidate all grocery and daily essential resources into the high-speed Amazon Now platform.

2. Strategic Shift: The “War of Attrition”

The move signals Amazon’s intent to capture the “impulse buy” market, where nearly 40% of online grocery sales in India now occur.

  • The “Now” Catalog: Unlike rivals who focus purely on snacks and staples, Amazon Now is leveraging its vast supply chain to offer over 40,000 items, including small appliances, beauty products, fashion, and baby care, alongside fresh produce.
  • Direct from Farm: The expansion will integrate over 16,000 farmers, allowing them to sell fresh produce directly to consumers through sellers on the platform, theoretically improving margins and freshness.
  • Prime Synergy: Amazon revealed that Prime members who start using Amazon Now triple their shopping frequency compared to those using standard shipping, making it a powerful tool for customer retention.

3. Investment & Operations

The ₹2,800 crore ($335 million) infusion is part of Amazon’s broader commitment to invest $35 billion in India by 2030.

  • Automation & Safety: A significant portion of the funds is earmarked for specialized fulfillment technology and improving the health, safety, and financial well-being of the delivery associate network.
  • Discounting War: Analysts note that this expansion comes as sector-wide discounts hit a record 55% in early 2026, suggesting Amazon is prepared to absorb short-term losses to regain market share from quick-commerce specialists.
