Halter, the New Zealand-based agritech startup behind the famous AI-powered “Cowgorithm” collars, is reportedly raising a fresh funding round that values the company at $2 billion.
The deal, led by billionaire Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, marks a rapid doubling of the company’s valuation since it reached “unicorn” status just nine months ago in June 2025.
The “Cowgorithm” & Virtual Fencing
Halter’s success lies in its solar-powered smart collars, which have effectively eliminated the need for physical fences and farm dogs on hundreds of thousands of acres.
- Virtual Fencing: Using sound and vibration cues, the collars guide cattle to specific grazing zones or milking sheds. Farmers can “move” an entire herd with a single tap on a smartphone app.
- Health Monitoring: Beyond herding, the collars track vital signs, fertility cycles, and digestion around the clock, allowing for early disease detection.
- Cost Efficiency: A New Mexico State University study recently estimated that Halter’s system costs roughly $92 per cow per year, compared to $188 per cow for maintaining traditional physical fencing.
Why Investors are “Fighting to Get In”
Despite a broader slump in the agritech sector, the current round is reportedly heavily oversubscribed. Investors are pivoting toward Halter for three key reasons:
- The Labor Crisis: With over half of U.S. ranchers aged 55+ and severe labor shortages—exacerbated by recent shifts in immigration policy—Halter allows smaller teams to manage larger herds more efficiently.
- SaaS-Style Revenue: Rather than just selling hardware, Halter operates on a subscription model, charging $5 to $9 per cow per month. This predictable, recurring revenue makes it highly attractive to Silicon Valley VCs.
- U.S. Expansion: Following a $100M Series D in 2025 led by BOND, Halter opened a headquarters in Colorado. It now supports over 200 ranchers across 20+ U.S. states.
| Metric | June 2025 (Series D) | March 2026 (Current Round) |
| Valuation | $1 Billion | $2 Billion (Reported) |
| Lead Investor | BOND Capital | Founders Fund |
| Managed Animals | ~250,000 | ~600,000+ |
| U.S. Presence | 18 States | 22+ States |
The “Farm OS” Vision
CEO Craig Piggott, a former engineer at Rocket Lab, has stated the goal is to build a “digital operating system” for the $1 trillion global cattle industry. By turning the “offline” world of ranching into a data-driven enterprise, Halter aims to make pasture farming both more profitable and more sustainable.
“A farmer opens an app, taps a button, and 600,000 cows across three countries start walking toward the milking station on their own. This isn’t the future; it’s happening this morning,” a Founders Fund partner noted regarding the investment.
