Google officially shook up the search landscape at I/O 2026 by unveiling a radical overhaul to Google Search, highlighted by a new, proactive feature called “Information Agents.”

Powered by the newly released Gemini 3.5 Flash model, this feature transforms Google Search from a reactive search box that waits for your queries into an always-on, 24/7 background assistant.

1. How Information Agents Work

Instead of typing a keyword and sifting through ten blue links, users can deploy an Information Agent using natural language within Search’s “AI Mode.”

  • Continuous Background Monitoring: Once tasked, these agents run autonomously on dedicated virtual machines in Google Cloud. They actively monitor the web—reasoning across blogs, news sites, financial tickers, shopping platforms, and social feeds—long after you close your browser or turn off your device.
  • Proactive Synthesized Updates: When an agent flags a relevant change, it doesn’t just send a raw keyword notification like the old Google Alerts tool. It synthesizes data from multiple sources, explains why the development matters, compares perspectives, and sends an actionable update via push notification.
  • Versatile Everyday Use Cases: Google demonstrated several core tasks you can assign to these agents:
    • Finance: Tracking stock movements, scanning breaking market intelligence, and summarizing quarterly earnings.
    • Real Estate & Jobs: Watching for hyper-local apartment listings or specific job openings that match complex criteria.
    • Lifestyle: Tracking flight prices, movie ticket availability, or monitoring weather and traffic anomalies.

2. Part of a Massive Search Redesign

Information Agents are part of a broader, deeper evolution of Google’s flagship product, shifting the internet’s entry point into fully “agentic” territory.

FeatureWhat It DoesAvailability (2026)
Information Agents24/7 background web monitoring and automated intelligence synthesis.Coming this summer for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers (US).
Intelligent Search BoxAn expandable multimodal input field accepting text, files, images, video, and open Chrome tabs simultaneously.Rolling out globally.
Generative UIInstantly codes custom widgets, live dashboards, and charts on the fly to visually answer complex queries.Free for all users globally.
Mini-Apps (Antigravity)Allows users to build persistent personal trackers or planners (e.g., a custom wedding planner) using natural language.Launching this summer for AI Pro & Ultra subscribers.

3. Deep Workspace Synergy: Gemini Spark

Alongside Search-centric agents, Google introduced Gemini Spark, an enterprise-focused “personal AI agent.”

While Information Agents keep their eyes on the public web, Spark integrates deeply with Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, and Slides. Users can authorize Spark to remember past actions and automate multi-step digital workflows in the background, such as scanning monthly bank statements for hidden subscription charges or sorting through complex email threads to build daily executive summaries.

4. Strategic Market Timing

The “agent-first” pivot comes at a highly competitive moment. Google revealed at I/O that its AI search tools are scaling exponentially, with AI Overviews reaching 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode crossing 1 billion monthly active users. Openly deploying autonomous consumer agents is widely seen as Google’s defensive moat to lock in users before standalone agentic apps from OpenAI or Anthropic capture the market.
