WhatsApp tests ‘spoiler message’ feature

Group chats are about to get a lot safer for television and movie fans. In a major quality-of-life update, WhatsApp is officially testing a native “Spoiler” text formatting feature across its iOS, Android, and macOS beta platforms.

Discovered by the feature-tracking platform WABetaInfo, the upcoming tool functions similarly to Discord or Reddit’s spoiler blocks. It allows users to intentionally mask specific words, sentences, or entire text streams behind a blurred, pixelated layer. The recipient must then actively tap the censored block to uncover the hidden message, effectively ending accidental plot reveals in crowded group chats.

How the Native Spoiler Feature Works

Until now, WhatsApp users looking to hide a plot twist had to rely on cumbersome third-party copy-paste workarounds that flooded a text box with thousands of “zero-width spaces” to force a artificial “Read More” button.

The new native update integrates seamlessly into WhatsApp’s existing text-formatting toolkit alongside Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, and Monospace.

[ Traditional Formatting Menu ] ──► Bold (*) ──► Italic (_) ──► Monospace (```)
                                                                           │
                                                        (New Addition) ────▼
                                                           Spoiler Formatting (||)

The Two Ways to Use It:

  • The Context Menu UI: Highlight your typed text inside the message bar, tap the three-dot formatting sub-menu, and select “Spoiler” from the drop-down list.
  • The Syntax Shortcut: For power-users, typing double vertical bars (pipes) before and after your text will automatically apply the spoiler effect: ||Insert Spoiler Here||.

Once sent, the message arrives on the recipient’s phone completely obscured. Crucially, the app is designed to reset the blur filter every time a user exits and re-opens the chat workspace—ensuring the content remains safely hidden by default if someone opens the conversation thread later.

The Strategic Expansion: Hidden Sensitive Data

While avoiding plot twists for trending television series is the primary consumer hook, cybersecurity experts note that the feature serves a dual purpose as a rapid, on-the-go privacy tool.

Privacy Beyond Pop Culture

“The spoiler tag acts as a valuable protective shield against shoulder surfing in public spaces,” notes digital security analysts. “If you need to text someone a dynamic One-Time Password (OTP), a bank account number, or a private address while sitting on public transit, masking the text behind a blur wall prevents nearby strangers from capturing sensitive text at a glance.”

At its current stage of beta development, the formatting tool is strictly confined to textual strings and message captions. However, industry insiders suggest that Meta is already building out the architectural framework to extend this blurred occlusion layer to incoming photo and video files, matching the “Invisible Ink” capabilities of Apple’s iMessage.

Deployment Timeline

The feature is currently rolling out gradually to select users enrolled in the Google Play Beta Program (v2.26.7.10) and the Apple TestFlight iOS beta ecosystem.

Because the code is already appearing across mobile and desktop applications concurrently, a public stable rollout is heavily anticipated to hit global app stores ahead of the third quarter of 2026.
