New report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky revealed that 24.7% (nearly one in four) of internet users in India faced web-borne cyberthreats during 2025.
The data, processed by the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), underscores a significant escalation in the digital risk profile for the country as it continues its rapid digital expansion.
Key Statistics from the Report
India is currently ranked 62nd globally in terms of users affected by online threats, reflecting both the scale of the user base and the persistence of attackers.
| Metric | 2025 Performance / Statistics |
| Total Threats Blocked | Over 4.75 crore (47,526,422) internet-borne attacks. |
| Daily Threat Frequency | An average of 1,30,209 web threats encountered per day. |
| Primary Attack Vector | Browser-based exploits (targeting vulnerabilities in browsers and plug-ins). |
| Most Dangerous Malware | File-less malware, which operates in memory to leave minimal traces. |
The Evolving Threat Landscape
Cybercriminals in India have shifted away from simple opportunistic attacks toward more sophisticated, psychological-based campaigns.
- Digital Arrest Scams: A significant trend in 2025 involved fraudsters using AI-generated uniforms and background noise to simulate police stations during video calls, coercing victims into “settlement” payments.
- Malicious Emails & Phishing: Globally, email attacks grew by 15% in 2025. In the Asia-Pacific region, India remains a top target for refined phishing attempts that use QR codes and link protection services to bypass security filters.
- “Digital Hygiene” Gap: A separate report by Seqrite and DSCI found that 57% of Indian organizations still lack basic cyber hygiene practices, despite the 20% of GDP now being contributed by the digital economy.
Economic & Human Impact
The surge in threats is resulting in massive financial losses and a growing “forensic talent gap” at the law enforcement level.
- Financial Toll: Data from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed that Indians lost approximately โน22,495 crore to cybercrime in 2025 alone.
- Targeting Rural India: With over 86% of households now connected to the internet, attackers are increasingly targeting first-time digital users in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities who may be less familiar with security best practices.
- Investment Scams: These accounted for 76% of all money lost in 2025, fueled by the allure of “easy money” schemes and fake trading apps.
Government Response
To combat these threats, the Union Budget 2025-26 allocated โน782 crore specifically for cybersecurity projects. Additionally, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has been successful in blocking thousands of fraudulent Skype IDs and WhatsApp accounts, recovering over โน8,031 crore in stolen funds since its inception.
