Sarvam AI partner with SBI Life to build AI applications

Sarvam AI announced a strategic partnership with SBI Life Insurance to deploy a suite of multilingual, voice-first AI applications.

The collaboration aims to transform how insurance is sold and serviced in India by leveraging Sarvam’s “Sovereign AI” stack, which is specifically tuned for Indian languages and cultural nuances.

Key AI Applications in Development

The partnership focuses on three primary pillars of the insurance lifecycle:

  • Voice-Based Policy Servicing: Using the Sarvam Samvaad platform, SBI Life will deploy AI agents capable of handling complex policy queries (like fund value, premium due dates, and surrender values) in over 11 Indian languages. These agents are designed to handle “noisy” real-world environments and “Hinglish” dialects.
  • Multilingual Claims Assistance: An AI-led “Claim-Bot” will guide nominees through the documentation process via voice or WhatsApp. It will use Sarvam Vision to instantly “read” and verify scanned death certificates or hospital records in various Indian scripts.
  • Agent Sales Enablement: SBI Life’s massive network of individual agents will gain access to an AI “Co-pilot” that helps them explain complex product terms and riders in the customer’s native tongue, ensuring better transparency and reducing mis-selling.

Why Sarvam for SBI Life?

SBI Life is moving its AI operations away from generic global models (like GPT-4) to Sarvamโ€™s indigenous stack for several strategic reasons:

FeatureStrategic Advantage
Data SovereigntyAll customer data remains within India’s borders, complying with the latest RBI and IRDAI data localization mandates.
Voice-First DesignOver 60% of SBI Life’s customers are in non-metro areas where voice is the preferred digital interface over typing.
Cost EfficiencySarvam’s MoE (Mixture of Experts) architecture allows these models to run at a fraction of the cost of foreign API-based models.
Zero Data DependencySarvam models are built from scratch on Indian datasets, ensuring they don’t carry Western biases regarding financial planning.

A “Population Scale” Milestone

This partnership is being viewed as a major proof-of-concept for the IndiaAI Mission. By integrating with a financial giant like SBI Life, Sarvam is attempting to take AI from “lab benchmarks” to “population-scale” utility.

“Our goal is that every SBI Life policyholder, regardless of the language they speak or their tech-literacy, should be able to get their questions answered instantly by a friendly, culturally-fluent AI voice.” โ€” Vivek Raghavan, Co-founder of Sarvam AI.

Timeline

  • Pilot Phase: Already active in select branches in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
  • Nationwide Rollout: Expected by August 2026, coinciding with the full launch of Sarvam’s 105B parameter “Sovereign” model.
