OnePlus plans to shut down Europe business

After years of shifting strategies and legal hurdles, OnePlus is reportedly preparing to shut down a significant portion of its global operations, including vast portions of Europe and North America, as early as April 2026.

The news, which first surfaced through industry leaks earlier this week, has gained massive credibility following the sudden resignation of Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India, who stepped down on March 24 just weeks after publicly denying these very rumors.

1. The Timeline of the “Global Exit”

While OnePlus has not officially released a “shutdown notice,” internal movements and corroborated reports from 9to5Google and Android Authority suggest a rapid withdrawal:

  • April 2026: Operations in the UK, EU, and US are expected to cease or be drastically reduced.
  • Severance Packages: Reports indicate that key staff members in Western offices have already been informed and issued severance packages.
  • The “China-First” Pivot: OnePlus is expected to retreat to its home market in China, where it currently holds a small (~1.6%) market share, and maintain a presence in Indiaโ€”though with a restricted focus.

2. Why is OnePlus Leaving?

The decision appears to be a combination of internal restructuring by parent company OPPO and external economic pressures.

  • OPPO Consolidation: OPPO is reportedly “leaning out” its portfolio to focus on its own brand and its other sub-brand, Realme. Analysts suggest OnePlus is being “dismantled” to reduce overlap.
  • Component Shortages: A global memory and storage shortage in early 2026 has sent manufacturing costs skyrocketing. Trimming “low-margin” global markets is a move to protect the group’s overall profitability.
  • The Nokia Patent Shadow: Despite a 2024 settlement that briefly allowed a return to Germany, the legal costs and regional bans (2022 and 2024) severely damaged OnePlus’s momentum in Europe, from which it never fully recovered.

3. What Happens to Your Current Phone?

If you currently own a OnePlus 13, 15, or Nord, the company has reiterated its commitment to existing users.

“There is a full guarantee of users’ after-sales support, software updates, and rights commitments,” OnePlus stated in a recent clarification.

FeatureStatus for Existing Users
Software UpdatesWill continue as promised (up to 4 years for flagships).
Security PatchesGuaranteed for up to 6 years on recent models.
Spare PartsAfter-sales service centers will remain operational through OPPO’s network.
Future DevicesOnePlus 16 / 17 are unlikely to launch in Europe or the US.

4. The “India Strategy”: A Budget Shift

India remains a “business continuity” market for OnePlus, but the “Flagship Killer” era appears to be ending there as well.

  1. Nord Focus: The brand is shifting its primary India strategy toward the Nord series (budget and mid-range) to compete with Xiaomi and Samsung.
  2. Premium Decline: With sales falling 38.8% year-on-year in 2025, OnePlus has lost significant ground in India’s premium tier to the iPhone and Galaxy S-series.
  3. No Successor: Following Robin Liu’s exit, the company has not yet named a new CEO for the India region.
