Meta is rolling out a biometric security feature for its smart glasses lineup called “Palm Unlock”. Discovered by users in the v125 software patch, the update introduces a brand-new way to secure the wearable without needing to reach for a paired smartphone.

How It Works: Biometrics for Your Face

Much like using a fingerprint sensor or facial recognition on a phone, Palm Unlock treats the unique, distinctive details of a user’s palm as a security key.

  • The Scan: While Meta hasn’t released a slick commercial tutorial yet, early code and user reports indicate that you simply hold your open palm in front of the glasses’ ultra-wide camera lens to complete a quick biometric verification scan.
  • On-Device Privacy: To alleviate privacy concerns over sensitive biometric harvesting, Meta states that all palm data is processed and stored locally on the device’s hardware and is never transmitted to Meta’s external servers.

What Else is Packed in the v125 Update?

Palm Unlock is the headline feature, but the v125 firmware update includes a handful of other notable upgrades:

  • Posture Detection: The glasses will now leverage internal motion sensors to track your head position and subtly alert you if you are slouching or craning your neck too aggressively.
  • Real-Time Call Captions: When taking phone calls, the smart glasses can now project real-time text captions across the lens display.
  • POV WhatsApp Video Calls: Users can now participate in multi-person group video calls via WhatsApp, sharing the point-of-view (POV) camera feed so everyone on the call can see exactly what the wearer is looking at in real time.
  • Live Sports Updates: A new “Live Sports” option allows users to stream quick score cards and match updates directly onto the built-in heads-up display (HUD).

A Staggered Rollout

If you haven’t seen the feature pop up in your Meta View companion app yet, don’t panic. Meta is pushing the v125 patch out via a staggered, regional rollout. Some users on early iterations (like v125.1 and v125.3) have reported a slight delay in the features populating on their specific devices, meaning it may take a few days to hit your hardware.
