The Ministry of Railways recently announced that Indian Railways will hire over 50,000 employees in the financial year 2025–26. The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have already issued more than 9,000 appointment letters in just the first quarter—showing strong momentum toward their goal
These new jobs are part of a major effort to fill more than 55,197 vacancies across the country. Since November 2024, RRBs have held Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) for over 1.86 crore candidates under seven recruitment notifications
Making Recruitment Fair and Smooth
To help with this giant hiring task, Indian Railways has made several changes:
- Local exam centres: Tests are now conducted closer to candidates’ homes, especially benefiting women and people with disabilities
- Aadhaar-based e-KYC: Identity checks during exams now use Aadhaar-based verification, with over 95% success
- Anti-cheating measures: Jammers are installed in every centre to stop electronic cheating
These efforts aim to make recruitment transparent, fair, and accessible.
What Roles Are Being Filled?
Most of the 55,197 posts include various positions like clerks, technicians, track workers, and junior staff. The ministry plans to appoint more than 50,000 of these vacancies during FY 2025–26
In FY 2024–25, RRBs issued 12 notifications covering 108,324 total vacancies. The next fiscal year (2026–27) expects another 50,000+ appointments
Why Is This Hiring Surge Important?
- Safety and service: Filling critical roles helps reduce accidents and delays.
- Addressing staff shortages: Many safety-related and operational roles were empty. This recruitment fills big staffing gaps .
- Boosting the economy: Over 50,000 new jobs help families and local economies.
What’s Next?
RRBs will continue hosting CBTs and issuing appointment letters. With more than 9,000 hires already complete, they are well on track to reach the 50,000 goal. Additional steps include:
- More exam centres for remote or disabled applicants
- Continued use of anti-cheating tech
- Launching fresh announcements for future recruitment
Summary
Indian Railways is set to hire over 50,000 employees in FY25, filling more than 55,000 open roles through fair, modern recruitment methods. With stronger exam security and better access for all candidates, this represents one of the largest job drives in recent years.
