Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is working toward a revised target of completing 16 Tejas Mk-1A jets by the end of this month (March 31, 2026). However, the actual delivery of these aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) remains precarious due to ongoing engine supply issues and recent technical setbacks.
The “16-Jet” Target vs. Reality
While HAL’s leadership has publicly anticipated completing 16 airframes this fiscal year, there is a significant gap between “completed aircraft” and “delivered jets.”
- Current Status: As of late February 2026, only 5 Tejas Mk-1A jets are fully ready for delivery.
- The “Engine Bottleneck”: The primary reason for the shortfall is GE Aerospace. HAL was supposed to receive a steady flow of F404 engines, but as of February, only five engines had been delivered. Nearly a dozen additional airframes are physically built but remain grounded, awaiting engine integration.
- Software & Certification: Beyond engines, final delivery is being delayed by the integration of advanced software suites and pending Staff Qualitative Requirements (SQR) certifications.
Recent Setbacks & Fleet Grounding
The program faced a major blow in February 2026, following reports of a third technical incident involving the Tejas platform:
- February 7 Incident: A Tejas jet (Mk-1) reportedly overshot the runway at a frontline airbase due to a brake failure. While the pilot ejected safely, the airframe sustained major structural damage.
- Fleet Grounding: Following this incident, the IAF reportedly grounded its entire operational fleet of approximately 30 single-seat Tejas jets for comprehensive technical inspections.
- Safety Record: This follows two previous high-profile losses: a crash near Jaisalmer in March 2024 and a fatal crash at the Dubai Airshow in November 2025.
Production Outlook for 2026-27
To meet the IAF’s urgent need for fighter squadrons, HAL is attempting to accelerate its output using three production lines (including the new facility in Nashik):
| Metric | Target / Status |
| Total Mk-1A Ordered | 180 Jets (83 in 2021 + 97 in 2025) |
| Current Annual Capacity | 24 Jets (Target across 3 lines) |
| Revised Delivery Window | Most analysts expect the first batch to be formally inducted by mid-2026. |
| Strategic Goal | Replace the retired MiG-21s and the upcoming phase-out of the Jaguar fleet (starting 2029). |
The “Atmanirbhar” Push
Despite the delays, the Ministry of Defence remains committed to the platform. In September 2025, a second mega-order for 97 additional Mk-1A jets was signed, bringing the total order book to 180 units. The upcoming batch will feature even higher indigenous content, including the Uttam AESA Radar and the Astra BVR missile.
