Anthropic has officially ended the “quiet subsidy” for its power users. Starting April 4, 2026, Claude Pro and Max subscribers can no longer use their standard monthly subscription limits to power OpenClaw or other third-party AI agent frameworks.
Users who wish to continue using Claude as the “brain” for their autonomous agents must now pay for that usage through a separate pay-as-you-go billing system or by using a direct Claude API key.

The decision stems from the massive disparity between conversational AI use and agentic AI use. Anthropicโs head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, explained that the subscriptions were simply “not built for the usage patterns” of these tools.
