BSNL Joins Nuclear Energy Race: Seeks Entry via NPCIL’s Bharat Small Reactor Project

BSNL is among several Indian companies that responded to NPCIL’s RFP to set up two 220 MWe Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) for captive use.

BSNL submitted formal queries regarding reactor size flexibility, land needs, deployment in urban locations, carbon credit eligibility, and government support.

NPCIL clarified reactor size is fixed at 220 MWe and any urban location proposal must be cleared by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

All funding, land acquisition, and development responsibilities lie with the private developer as per RFP terms.

NPCIL received 687 total queries from interested firms, including Tata, Reliance, Adani, Godrej, BHEL, ITC, and Indian Railways.

Common queries involved financial structures, tax incentives, ownership rights, and operational obligations.

NPCIL will remain the sole operator of the plants under the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010.

Developers must cover insurance and nuclear safety-related security expenses.

Companies are permitted to propose multiple project locations across India for BSR deployment.

The government is evaluating amendments to Electricity Rules to enable nuclear power usage for captive consumption by industrial players.
