Anthropic Launches Claude AI Agent in Chrome for Controlled Research Preview

Anthropic has begun rolling out Claude for Chrome, a browser extension that allows its AI assistant to work directly within Google Chrome. Currently, the feature is in a research preview stage, available only to 1,000 users on its Max plan, with a broader waitlist opening soon.

Once installed, Claude appears as a sidecar within your browser, maintaining context across your browsing session. Users can instruct the agent to perform actions—from scheduling meetings and drafting emails to navigating websites and managing routine tasks—without leaving the browser

Privacy & Security: Built-in Safety First

Recognizing the risks posed by browser-level AI automation—particularly prompt injection attacks—Anthropic has implemented multiple security layers. For instance:

  • Permissions control: Users can freely grant or revoke Claude’s access to specific websites.
  • Action confirmations: High-risk commands (like purchases or data sharing) require explicit user approval.
  • Blocked categories: Claude is restricted from interacting with high-risk domains (e.g., finance, adult content).
  • Improved safeguards: Red-teaming trials showed an initial 23.6% success rate in attack scenarios, reduced to 11.2% after safety improvements. On browser-specific threats, mitigation dropped success rates from 35.7% to 0%.

Why It Matters in AI’s Race for Utility

This launch puts Anthropic in the growing league of companies pushing agentic AI systems that can interact with real software environments—streamlining tasks that often require manual input. It marks a tangible shift from passive chatbots to proactive assistants.

This measured launch contrasts with more aggressive rollouts by competitors like OpenAI’s “Operator” and Microsoft’s Copilot, as Anthropic emphasizes safety and controlled exposure.

What’s Next? User Access and Expansion

  • Public Waitlist: Anthropic is accepting sign-ups for further testing access, beyond the initial Max users.
  • Future enhancements: Additional safety layers and broader integrations will follow—once rigorously tested—to extend Claude’s browser capabilities safely.
