In a historic achievement for the Indian telecom sector, Bharti Airtel has officially become the world’s second-largest telecommunications operator by subscriber base. The company announced it has crossed the milestone of 650 million customers globally, surpassing major international players to trail only China Mobile, which maintains the top spot with over 1 billion users.
The announcement, backed by data from GSMA Intelligence, underscores Airtel’s successful dual-continent strategy across India and Africa.
1. The Global Leaderboard (April 2026)
Airtel’s rise to the #2 spot is a result of consistent growth in high-population markets, moving ahead of regional giants that have more geographically concentrated operations.
| Rank | Telecom Operator | Primary Markets | Subscriber Base |
| 1 | China Mobile | China | ~1.05 Billion |
| 2 | Bharti Airtel | India & Africa | 650 Million |
| 3 | Reliance Jio | India | ~500+ Million |
| 4 | China Telecom | China | ~410 Million |
| 5 | China Unicom | China | ~340 Million |
2. Market Breakdown: India vs. Africa
Airtel’s scale is driven by its massive footprint in two of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
- India Operations: Serves over 368 million mobile customers. It also commands a significant presence in non-mobile sectors with 13 million fixed broadband (FWA/Fiber) homes and 15 million Digital TV users.
- Africa Operations: Its subsidiary, Airtel Africa, operates in 14 countries with 179 million customers.
- Airtel Money: The company’s mobile financial platform now has over 52 million users, providing essential banking services in regions with low traditional bank penetration.
3. Financial & Operational Milestones
The news coincided with several other major announcements from the Bharti group:
- Nxtra Investment: Airtel secured a $1 billion investment for Nxtra, its data center arm, to scale infrastructure for the AI and cloud era.
- NBFC Capitalization: The company recently moved to capitalize its new Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) subsidiary with ₹20,000 crore, aiming to become a major player in digital lending and credit products.
- Market Share: As of February 2026, Airtel’s wireless market share in India rose to 37.59%, significantly narrowing the gap with market leader Reliance Jio in terms of active, high-value users.
4. The “Second in India” Paradox
Despite being the second-largest operator globally, Airtel remains the second-largest operator in its home market, India.
- Reliance Jio continues to hold the #1 spot in India with over 500 million subscribers.
- However, because Jio operates exclusively within India, its global ranking sits at #3, allowing Airtel’s international “India + Africa” total to take the global silver medal.
5. Leadership Vision
“Achieving the milestone of 650 million customers to be the second largest operator globally is a great responsibility,” stated Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel. “We will strive to raise the bar on innovation, reliability, and experience so that every customer interaction is an opportunity to earn trust.”
