No Tatkal Ticket Booking Without Aadhaar Authentication From July 1

Beginning July 1, 2025, Indian Railways will mandate Aadhaar-based authentication for all Tatkal ticket bookings through IRCTC. The move aims to enhance security, prevent misuse, and improve transparency in India’s high-demand train reservation system.

What Is Changing?

Tatkal ticket bookings, often used for last-minute travel plans, will now require:

  • Aadhaar number linked to IRCTC account
  • OTP-based verification at the time of booking

This will apply to all users booking under the Tatkal quota across classes and routes.

Why the New Rule?

According to railway authorities, the Aadhaar requirement is intended to:

  • Minimize fraudulent bookings by bots and touts
  • Ensure genuine identity of passengers
  • Enhance the integrity of the reservation process

How to Prepare

To avoid disruptions:

  • Link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account before July 1.
  • Ensure your mobile number is updated in Aadhaar for OTP verification.
  • Test your account for Aadhaar-based login in advance.

Exceptions & Assistance

As of now, the rule is mandatory only for Tatkal bookings. Regular and general ticket bookings do not yet require Aadhaar. IRCTC has assured users that support will be available through customer service channels for any authentication issues.

Public Reaction

The move has received mixed responses. While many welcome it as a step toward cleaner bookings, some express concerns about privacy and digital accessibility, especially in rural regions.

Conclusion

From July 1, Aadhaar Tatkal ticket booking authentication will be a must. Passengers are advised to link and verify their Aadhaar details early to ensure smooth last-minute travel planning.
