DRDO’s Humanoid Robot to Assist in Frontline Military Missions by 2027

In a significant stride toward modernizing India’s defense capabilities, scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune are developing a humanoid robot designed to assist in frontline military operations. This initiative aims to reduce the risk to human soldiers by deploying robots in high-threat environments.


Project Overview

The project is spearheaded by the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), a premier DRDO laboratory. The humanoid robot is being engineered to perform complex tasks under direct human command, thereby minimizing troop exposure in hazardous terrains such as jungles and conflict zones.

S.E. Talole, Group Director at the Centre for Systems and Technologies for Advanced Robotics within R&DE (Engineers), revealed that the team has been engaged in this project for the past four years. Prototypes for both the upper and lower body have been developed, with internal trials demonstrating the robot’s capability to execute specific functions.


Technical Specifications

The humanoid robot incorporates advanced features to mimic human-like movements and perform intricate tasks:

  • Actuators: These function like human muscles, enabling the robot to move its limbs with precision.
  • Sensors: Equipped with sensors that gather real-time environmental data, allowing the robot to navigate and operate effectively in diverse conditions.
  • Control Systems: These analyze sensor data to dictate the robot’s actions, ensuring responsive and adaptive behavior.

The upper body is designed with lightweight arms featuring a spherical revolute joint configuration, providing 24 degrees of freedom—seven in each arm, four in the gripper, and two in the head. The project is currently in an advanced development phase, focusing on enhancing the robot’s ability to interpret and execute operator commands accurately. According to Kiran Akella, a scientist leading the design team, the humanoid robot is expected to be fully operational by 2027.
