Google rolled out an update for its AI assistant Gemini, introducing an opt-in memory feature that allows it to recall past conversations and personalize future ones. Alongside this, a Temporary Chat option enables private, unsaved interactions—striking a balance between personalization and user privacy.
What’s New
1. Automatic Memory via Personal Context
Gemini now learns from previous chats to craft more relevant, natural responses—whether that’s remembering your favorite book genre or tailoring suggestions based on earlier brainstorming sessions. Available by default for users on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries, the feature will expand to the 2.5 Flash version and more regions soon
2. Temporary Chats for Privacy
Need a private conversation? Temporary Chats won’t appear in your recent history or be used to personalize future interactions. These one-off discussions are kept only up to 72 hours, after which they’re deleted—offering a clean slate when needed
3. Enhanced Data Controls
The “Gemini Apps Activity” tab is being renamed “Keep Activity.” This controls whether your uploads—such as files or photos—are used to improve AI services. Users can disable this anytime or rely on Temporary Chats to avoid data sharing altogether
Why This Matters
- Smarter, More Natural Conversations
Gemini now acts more like a conversational partner who remembers your preferences—no more repeating yourself every session. - Privacy at Your Fingertips
With Temporary Chats and activity controls, Google gives you flexibility over what’s remembered—and what’s not. - Staying Competitive
This rollout brings Gemini closer to memory capabilities seen in other AI platforms, such as ChatGPT and Anthropic, but with added user-side privacy features
Summary Table
